College Scholarships | UT Austin

Safeway

Lifer
Edit: What I really want to know is if any ATOT readers know of a scholarship source - be it themselves, friends, family, employer, small business, big business ...

If you guys know of any financial assistance I can apply for, please PM me!

--

Just to be clear, I am not begging for money. I am merely trying to minimize my debt.

So, I am an Architectural Engineering major in the Honors Engineering program at the University of Texas at Austin. I have been looking around at scholarship offers and I don't qualify for 95% of them due to race, high school, year, age, family, etc. Alot of the cost falls on me, since my parents are trying to support two kids in college, one at SMU and me, at UT. I graduated from Dallas ISD, specifically the Talented and Gifted Magnet.

I was just wondering if someone knew of any scholarship/grant oppurtunities that I could apply for. I know that individuals occasionally offer small scholarships as tax write-offs. Small businesses do as well in order to "give back to the community".

Thanks.

Except for the fact that I need a computer ... at college. And I am selling one of the Samsung 172x right now. I am doing alot of CAD work for school, and hopefully can use the computer to get little jobs.

Sell a desktop for 2-3k? Yeah right!

 the point was he could save money if he didn't get such top of the line computer parts as a needy college student. But since he explained he needs to do cad stuff I guess a 6800gt isn't a mere luxury.

I am very skeptical signing up for oddball scholarship offers like those listed below. If they seem too good to be true ($10k, $50k, ... apply in seconds), then they probably are. With all the scholarship fraud going around, I like to know that I might recieve money, not lose money.

when i applied to UT 6 years ago they had a common scholarship application... its like one thing you fill out and 2 or 3 essays to write, but then it gets submitted to a lot of different scholarships. i was in the same boat as you pretty much, parents make a lot of money and claim me as a dependent (disqualifying me from financial aid), but didnt help out with school. i seem to recall that these were merit scholarships for the most part.

fwiw, i did end up receiving one and kept it all four years.

Yea, I got a 2500 the first year from UT. But non-renewable...

Free African-American scholarships, internships and jobs.

My point. I'm "male, middle class, and white."

Yea, I've puttered around there. I did very well in high school, 1520 SAT, 34 ACT, 3.9ish regular GPA, but 19 AP classes. I didn't get a single bite.

Of course. I applied for the general UT scholarships and the department scholarships.

Apply for fafsa and you get pell grants (free money if you are qualifed.)

I did, and I don't.

Like I said, my parents make too much (middle class) to get grants (free money) and they are making me pay for most of it. I was looking for actual scholarships from lesser known sources.

That's BS, I come from middle class and I get like $3,000 in pell grants.

In addition to all the stuff people said before, try asking your dept too.

go by the engineering scholarships department in ECJ 2.106. i used to work there. if you have a pretty good GPA (i'm assuming you just finished your freshman year?), you can qualify for one of the long-term scholarships. fill out both the normal university scholarships application and the engineering scholarship application.

if you just finished your freshman year, you'll be eligible for a lot more awards now that you no longer are classified a freshman. very little freshmen get any money. apart from that, sign up for the engr scholarships mailing list, and keep on top of that. i got three different scholarships, for the second half of my freshman year, my sophomore year, and my junior year, and they were all through the engr scholarship application.

Thanks for the help. I will be living in Andrews again next year. I think I might be classified as a Junior for Fall 2005 since I currently have 52 hours, and am taking 9 hours this Summer. That puts me at 61 hours after Freshman year 🙂

I have applied to all on-campus scholarships that fit my profile, and the eng. scholarship mailing list. My Cum. GPA is a 3.7xxxx, last semester was a 3.81xxx.

Scholarship info hasn't been released yet, as far as I know, but I was looking for other oppurtunities for scholarships.

being classified as a junior will help a lot. lots of companies want a junior to give a scholarship to so that they can hire them as an intern for the junior year summer... and recruit them full time after their senior year. if you have above a 3.7, you *should* get a scholarship through engineering scholarships. just work on keeping that up and you should be set =P another thing that would help is organizational / leadership experience. companies LOVE that stuff and usually give scholarships for members of specific organizations. hell, i was a member of SWE for one year cause i'd helped em out with some stuff. i'd suggest getting involved with the student engineering council (i'm partial towards them cause i was an officer =P). email cindy smith (she's the current SEC president - look her up on x500) or visit http://studentorgs.utexas.edu/utsec/ to check out some summer or early fall committes you may be interested in.

edit: did you fill out the all-in-one engineering scholarships application and update it?

Talk to the advisers about the aid available, they can be really helpful.

And hook 'em baby! 😀

That is all true ... I am a member of ASCE since Arch.E is part of it - kinda. I have worked at a professional actuarial firm for 6 years now every Summer.

As for the general application, I did fill it out, yes. Last year, I got a $2500 nonrenewable from UT, nothing from Engineering, and a $1000 from a local (*Dallas) engineering firm.
