IMO, that choice is a matter of personal interest. The application of accounting, economics, or finance each provide different opportunities that would take a person in different directions. Each is similar to the other with little advantage of one being better than the others.

I minored in accounting and it has provided opportunities for me with database programming in insurance and software development for farm accounting. Other opportunities included consulting for any of the big accounting firms but I purposely stayed away from those.

Economics and finance could get a person into the banking or even stock trading arenas. This area provides large financial rewards in a cut-throat industry with much stress but can be a great area for someone interested.

IMHO accounting can get you into ANYTHING business related (except IB), tack on the IS angle and you're on your way to becoming well qualified to do anything related to business OR systems (except programming, which to me is a dead end major for most)

case in point, we have 3-4 guys here with CS degrees/backgrounds to handle the architecture/planning/design, but in terms of actual coding it's ALL outsourced to india (which means technical business analysts and functional business analysts are in demand since these roles are not outsourced)

YMMV, just putting in my thoughts.

When you mean 'working with computers' do you mean building and maintaining personal computers? If so, stay with Econ. The positions that make money in IT rarely do basic computer work. They also tend to involve a lot of after hours work

Major: Architecture

Profession: Network Admin

My experience with computers is very minor(upgrading components, messing around with software..) but I am interested in learning the communication and language part of CIS. The school doesn't have a CS program, but its CIS school is again regarded with high value. I don't mind long hours, I just want something that'll guarantee me a secure future. With Economics, I wanted to do something in the Environmental aspect: Agriculture or Natural Resources. I want to help make cities, countries and the world more sustainable. I just don't know what to expect from both these studies. Although, it may be judged as a useless study, I want to get into Philosophy because it would teach me values and moral that'll greatly help me in my social and professional life. It would also benefit me in writing and speaking, both of which I am horrible at lol. Thank You for all your suggestions! Keep em coming!

bolded does not compute

if you want a secure future studying econ is the worst way to go.

I don't know why people are saying to minor in CS....listen to NS1

IMO i'd do econ/philosophy as the minor and then cis or whatever as a major

imo you sound like you should look into either environmental engineering (Where you'll spend your time re-mediating, so kittens can hop in fields of deep green grass of sites that were former toxic waste dumps) or some kind of mixed study between urban planning/social ecology

edit:

job: engineering
