I am looking at going back to school and I was wondering can't a Electrical Eng do the job of a Computer Eng?

Thanks

it depends

there are overlaps, but there are parts exclusive (or more heavily emphasized) to each major.

Yea... but they do end up specializing in different areas. The only difference between EE and CSE(our schools name for it) was two courses Electro-Magnetics and Electro-Dynamics.

Comp Eng is really a part of EE that is specialized in computer/compiler/hardware design

there is only a 3 course difference at my school between

EE concentration in CE and a CE degree

EE is generally harder by a little

No problem, why would you choose CE?

Well I have a few friends that are EE and some that are CE. Neither are having trouble finding jobs and most of the times they are being recruted for the same jobs. It all depends on what you want to do.

If you like computers then CE will help you get more specialized jobs. Having a EE certainly won't eliminate you from the same job but personally if I am applying for a computer related position I would rather have a CE than a EE.

Also most companies realize that if they need EE work that they can hire a CE to do the same job.

Truthfully I really don't think it matters all that much. Hell some schools make no distinction between the two.

Most my friends all seem to think they are about the same. It really depends on how you specialize within the major. You can take the "easy" electives in your major or you can take the quality elective classes in your major.

Thanks Codewiz, I am looking at becoming a Validation Eng with Intel. Currently I am working in Fab 21.

I'm an EE student at McGill and this is the feel I get for the difference between EE and CE

EE:
- More math involving differential equations, and calculus :D
- More work with analog circuitry
- More flexible and versatile, I can choose to take my technical complementaries in a way that almost equates a CE degree if I choose. I can choose from much more if I want to though.

CE:
- More theory of computing
- More programming/programming theory
- More discrete math
- More constrained, their technical complementaries are from a smaller range than EEs
- Maybe ever-so-slightly-easier (they don't have to take the hardest classes EEs have to take)

Personally, I chose to do an EE major and I'm taking a Software Eng. minor to complement it. That makes me an-almost CE, but I think I'm going to take technical complementaries in optics, something the CEs can't do.
Either one should work for what you're looking for. BTW you could always ask what they prefer ;)
