Talk to me about it...

I am going to a Community College right now, but next fall I am going to a University where I will be living in dorms (SINGLE, I refuse to live with someone I dont know) and leading the typical college life...

What does this consist of? I am trying to think about what types of things will go on, what I should bring, stuff like that...

What are some of your experiences?

Also, I am going to try to transfer as a Sophomore, unless there are hold ups in the process...

Another edit... I am touring SUNY Morrisville sometime over my winter break, and if I like the campus, I am applying right there, they have a killer program for me... Information Technology with a concentration in Network Administration... PHAT!

- drinking heavily during the weekends
- drinking heavily during the week
- beer bongs in the hallways
- getting IRs (incident reports) -> bad!
- floor theme parties w/ the stereos in 6 rooms hooked up to one computer via about 500ft of RCA cables
- drugs
- meeting lots of really cool people
- studying for the first time in your life
- girls
- depending on your degree, I've had an AWESOME time travelling all over the world since i became involved with our engr. student society
- horrendous student loans
- ridiculously expensive books
- skipping about 70% of classes and then cramming like mad before the finals

the list could go on and on....

why get a single.. get a roomate ..it's one of biggest college experiences..having a roomate that is.

wooah. I have to disagree with you there, dude. It CAN be a great experience, but then again it CAN also suck ass.
I never had a roommate in first year, but many of my friends had terrible ones. It's kinda like gambling

I would agree. If it's your first year you should get a roommate. It isn't always great, but it can often double the size of your social circle.
All the guys In our dorm that lived by themselves in first year were loners. It's college. Don't be like that

Wow! Nope. We never get attendance taken. That would be too much like high school! :Q
My buddies in commerce get their attendance taken, though.

I did the same thing, 2 years at Monroe CC and then 2 at SUNY Buffalo. Great Time!!!!!!

But I agree that livin with a roomate is a great experience, good or bad. Lots to be learned.

Hahaha. Most of the experiences I quoted were during my first year at university when I lived in res. We had a cafeteria, so no cookin' for me! I can definitely relate with "waking up in the morning" (which is somehow related to skipping 70% of classes ) and "trying to pay CC debts", though.

I just thought up some more:
- keg parties
- keg stands
- buying $1000 speakers for a party and returning them to Future Shop on the following Monday hehe
- underage BEvERages
- fake ID
- getting busted for fake ID
- getting kicked off resnet for a week for haxoring (aka subseven)
- getting kicked off resnet for a week for running hotline and ftp servers
- getting permanently kicked off resnet for spamming a couple thousand newsgroups with a get-rich-quick scheme

Dude, you should really get a roomate. It can be a total pain in the ass, but its all part of the experience. Hell, I should know...my freshman roomate tried to steal my car and drive to Mexico...but he didn't know how to drive stick. He got all of 5 blocks down the street before giving up. If I were an incoming freshman again, I'd still choose to have a roomate, though.

Seriously, get a roomate. Better yet, get a suite with 5 other guys. Theres no way you wont like at least one or two of them. You say you refuse to live with someone you dont know, but after a week, you'll know them now wont you?

College is the shiznit. I'm thinking this is pretty much going to be the peak of my younger years. I used to go to a local college, but transferred to SUNY stony brook, and its changed my life. I love every second of it. Whether its me and my suitemates causing trouble at 4 in the morning, or trying to get with the girl on the third floor, or smoking ridiculous amounts of weed with the kids down the hall, it just doesnt get any better.

But your experience is going to be what you make it. If youre just going to study, dont waste your time getting a roomate. If you want to have a good time, go for it.


As far as what to bring, bring a computer, and a big ass stereo. Everything else is secondary.

College life can only be experienced Get a roommate, and don't be a loner. Staying in your room all weekend sucks. Not that I know...I always have to go work on the weekends! Ah...college...

Oh yea, try not to get onto an all girls floor. As much fun as it may seem...it actually sucks. Girls are boring. Here, they're only drunk on thursdays....guys have really no limitations

Extra towels
Napkins
Tissue (you gotta have a stash)
extra chairs
TV/DVD/VCR
Big thumpin stereo system
Laptop (my desk is too small to study on with my current computer)
Extra wattage/brightness light bulbs
Posters
Calendars
TAPE, you needs lots of tape, duct AND scotch
You always have to have a supply of quarters
Always need water. More vital than anything in your fridge.
Mini table
bring your own mattress if you can.
bathroom ONLY sandals
Your own stapler
Your own hole puncher
Scissors
Pliars
Misc. Tools
Reading/Desktop Lamp



Anyways...what I really want now is BETTER lighting! Sigh...

i have to say live in the dorms. it may suck at times, but those nights were you put fly paper glue all over a hallway of doors and then tiolet papering th eplace is great!!!

Skipping classes to have fun is the premiere part of college. Chances are you will get a know-it-all prof who has never been in the real world, such as my database prof, who spent a massive 1 day on SQL language, and the rest on how wonderful Access is and how enterprise businesses use Access exclusively.

For me you can add

-getting a cushy high-paying job working for resnet, getting to have fun kicking people like khtm off the network

PS: A good litmus test for how challenging and useful a class will be is whether or not they take attendance.
In REAL classes, the profs might take attendance a few times just to know who is still on the roster and to get your name down. Other than that, they don't bother. They know their class is tough and it's stuff you either need or will want to know, so they figure if you can get a good grade without showing up half the time, more power to you.
In CRAP GenEd classes, the profs ALWAYS take attendance and have lame policies like -1 letter grade after 3 absences. They do this b/c they KNOW their class is a mindless sham and you'll breeze through with an A if you show up or not, so in order to give themselves something to do, they have to enforce their audience with attendance policies.

i agree with the people who say get a roommate. especially if you are going to school not knowing anyone. u WILL be the loner, unless you're extra friendly or use your single for parties or something

i met my one of my really good friends from my freshman year dorm. we are still living together now (i'm a senior)!

and if you have a really bad roommate it's always a great conversation topic to rag on him.

The funny thing is that I was the FIRST person EVER to be kicked off resnet. Campus security even came and visited me. It was sweet.

You sound right on the money with your attendance theory. That explains why I've never been in a class that took attendance

I'm going to vote for getting a roommate too. It will really expand your social circle. I've lived with 11 different people in three years. I've met a lot of people through my roommies. Granted I'm not in touch with any of them... but still, it was fun while it lasted.

College life is what you make out of it. It can be tons of fun, or it can be lonely, boring, and sad. You can get into the party scene, the drinking scene, the drug scene, the "involved" scene (campus organizations), the study scene... the list goes on. You can pick what you want to do and get involved. However, you've got to put forth the effort, no one else will do it for you. Just a bit of advice here:

Don't be too focused on the goals of good grades, finishing school, and getting on with your life. You will be at your school between 2 and 4 years, so LIVE those four years. College is just another stage in life, but don't try to rush through it, because you will look back at what you have missed and regret not taking the time to go to the parties, hang out with the friends, get involved. My last year of school I was focused on where I was going to be in a year when I should have been thinking of what I would be doing Friday night... Roll with the classes and the work, and live your life otherwise. If you don't enjoy college you can't blame anyone but yourself.
