college kid killed over 50 cents, protecting brother

what makes this story extra sad is that the victim himself was likely underprivileged, but doing something productive with his life by having a job and going to school.

A Bronx teen was charged Thursday with killing a college student who was trying to protect his little brother from a group of goons who were sticking him up over 50 cents.

Dasheem Campbell, 19, was among a group of young men who tried to rob 16-year-old Steven Hernandez outside an Allerton deli on Monday night.

Steven and Willmer Hernandez, 20, were at the Holland Ave. store about 11 p.m. to buy food for a planned trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. Willmer intervened when the punks demanded 50 cents from Steven.

According to cops, Campbell was with four or five others when they surrounded the Hernandez brothers.

"Yo, you guys got fifty cents?" Campbell asked the men, witnesses told police.

One of the young men then pulled out a gun and said, "Man, I've had enough of this shit!"

Another man then started going through Steven Hernandez's pockets and took his cell phone. Cops believe the gunman then shot Willmer Hernandez in his stomach.

Willmer, who worked at Red Lobster and attended Borough of Manhattan Community College, died at Jacobi Medical Center.

Campbell was charged with murder, robbery, assault, grand larceny, possession of stolen property and harassment. A judge ordered him held without bail.

Prosecutors said Campbell told cops he was in the store with his pit bull, Pepsi, to buy dog food, but realized he didn't have any money on him. As he was leaving, he said he heard a gun shot but kept walking.

Campbell has a sealed juvenile record and more recent arrests for grand larceny and robbery, a police source said.

"I know his family. They all work and go to school. He's got a sister in college," said Mildred Ramos, 60, who lives near Campbell's home in the Pelham Parkway Houses - just six blocks from the shooting scene.

"I've never seen him in trouble. I'm surprised he would do a bad thing."

Members of the victim's family were making funeral arrangements Thursday.

"I just hope he gets what he deserves," Hernandez's friend, Jasmin Garcia, 22, said of the suspect. "But nothing is going to bring Will back."

Cops are still hunting for the other members of the group.

I love how the friends and family are always "surprised" that they would do such a thing.

Bullshit.

When I found out one of my old best friends from middle school died in a gang shoot out, first thing I thought was "he would do something like that".

it doesn't say whether he refused to give up the 50 cents or not. i've been in the unfortunate circumstance of getting robbed at gunpoint. it's a very scary and surreal experience. happened so fast, but felt like time crawled to a stop at the moment. never look them in the eyes and just give everything up. ain't worth dying for.

Yeah that's crazy. I wonder if they gave up the 50 or not? I was robbed at gunpoint when I 16, it was a little .22 or something, but it doesnt matter when its 12" away from your face. You just gotta let it go. Not the time to see if someone would pull the trigger or not.

Most of the time when this happens, it's not for the money, these fucks just feel like they need to be gangster, get all fired up and start shooting. Go to a harlem or bronx gas station any time after 10pm, you frequently get approached by ghetto rats. I've had dudes come up to me telling me their woes about how they "just got out the joint" and they need 5 dollars. I just quietly get in my car and leave. You don't even acknowledge these beggars, because you don't know what they are really up to and once you respond in any way they usually get all hopped up.

Unfortunately it's not always possible to just walk away though, sad.

Parental denial is incredibly strong. But I think its even worse in upper middle class white neighborhoods.

"Oh no! My daughter didnt take it up the ass from 16 football players for an iPad!!" as the police show mom and dad pics, videos, and sworn testimony showing EXACTLY that.
