I'm gonna have to pick pretty soon what kind of room I want in college... I heard a few arguments for either:

single is nice cuz u have privacy, can bring women over to spend nite etc
double is nice cuz u have someone to talk to, u make friends quicker, if the person is cool he could be like your best friend or something .... BUUUT if hes a total assclown then ure fudged!! :D

so whats it gonna be? should i take the risk or just go single?

It's always good to get experience sharing living quarters. Personally, I couldn't stand to ever have a roommate again, but it is a lot better way to make new friends.

I would recommend going to a single. I am a freshmen, and the first semester I had a roommate and this semester I do not. Not that I didnt get along with the guy-we still hang out!- its just that there isnt much room.

yech, dorms.. glad i dont have to live in that crap..

my suggestion - get several friends and move into a house and share the rent/bills... then u can party and not have to worry about dorm nazis storming your room and confiscating your paraphenalia and booze

Well, I think you've thought through it pretty well. I had a double last year but my roommate ditched me for somebody else so I moved into a single this year. It's pretty great because I can do whatever I want but I'm working off my friends from last year; I haven't made any new ones this year. My ex-roommate hates his current roommate so he got the short end of that deal :) Next year we're moving into an apartment again. I think you really have to decide which is more important to you: friends or privacy.

My roomate know sucks but I know plenty of people that become really good friends with their roomates,
so it could go either way. If you think you will make plenty of friends on your own go for the single, cause having
a roomate means having roomate contracts, worrying about them being asleep late at night, etc.

I'm going to be one of those "dorm nazis" next year. :D

I had a double this year, roomed with a friend of mine from h.s. It's okay, but I'm ready to have my own room again.

Even though you may get a crappy roomate, don't be an antisocial freak. Give living with someone a try - it may be one of the best experiences of your life. :D

<< In a dorm, there are plenty people to talk to anyway.
Go single. You won't regret it.
>>

hmmm its just that im not the most outgoing person in the world so i fear that if i go single i wont have much exposure to other ppl and not make friends quickly or at all for that matter (lol @ insecurity)

If you already know a bunch of people in your college, or want to get some work done, go for a single.

If you know noone, try to get a double in a suite. If your college doesnt have suites, get a double in a hall.

With suites (6 in a suite here), youve got 5 chances. Chances are one of them is a dick, but the other 4 are usually cool. With a double, its either hit or miss.

Although keep in mind a single bad suitemate can tear apart a suite. My friends suite only has 3 people in it now, because one of them was so impossible to deal with that half the suite had to clear out.

I've had a double in a suite for 3 years now, and I'm looking forward to my single.

get a double if its your first year... plus, if you dont like your roommate, then you can always change, its easy. my friend has already moved once this past year and it took him one night.

If you know the person, then I would recommend a double, but if not a single all the way. Some people are as giving as you maybe or they maybe exactly like you. Just remember for every good roommate there is two bad roommates, I stayed with a guy my freshman year that had what seemed like an insomniac, and he didn't care about what other thought at all. My cool temper prevailed most of the time, until finals.

Double. A lot of life experience from living with different people... Go for the single room/apartment next year or later.

A double is great if you get along with the person, hell if you don't. I live in a double and my roommate is really cool and we are pretty good friends. I live in a cluster dealy, where there are 4 double rooms that share a lounge and a bathroom. Everyone in my cluster, 8 people are really cool (well one never, ever talks to us so maybe he's not), but it is kinda like having 7 other roommates. I have been really lucky, although there are horror stories. In the end I am glad I got a double (not that I had a choice anyway).

Right now, I really enjoy living in a double with my room mate. It makes a huge difference just to have someone to talk to, and someone that you can actually count on to back you up and help you with stuff. Living with someone means building an exceptionally close friendship with someone and learning to tolerate, compromise, yet have fun. :) It's really a good experience, and an opportunity that i don't think you should pass up on.

single. this is coming from a girls point of view, but, it was cool for my boyfriend to have a single. You will have plenty of oppertunities to meet people. You can always visit others rooms, but you can't kick out your roomate if youare ticked off or wanna be alone!

single. it's better. you can go to sleep whenever you want. you can do anything you want. you don't have to worry about a messy roommate. I had a double last year. this year i have a single. and next year i will have a single in an apartment. i think it worked out for the best.

what i was thinking is have a single first year, then for second or third year get an apartment off campus and share with 1 or more ppl. thing is id like to give living alone a shot, although i dont want to be antisocial...

ok heres a plan... year1 single, year2 double, 3 &4 apartment.... ? originally it would be 1 double and 2 single except if i have fun in year1 i doubt ill want to leave and go single!
