If you could afford to go to an ivy, then go. The brand name of that degree will get you places. Yes, a person from U of V could be just as talented, but they have much more proving to do on the first job. I know, it is an unfair assesment to make, but that is just how it goes. Also, not all jobs are regionally linked. There are tons of places that are willing to fly you accross the country for an interview.[/quote]

Spoken like a true noob.

I went Ivy and I know what I'm talking about. UVA=Ivy.

Pay no heed to the ignorance factor of people who DON'T make the decisions re: employment/grad school admissions.

Cornell for sure, Stanford is over-rated academically and probably would charge the same tuition as an ivy school just because they can

And you know they are over rated how?

I got into Cornell and Carnegie Mellon and am still waiting for my Stanford decision. I'm going into Computer and Electrical engineering. I live in Virginia.

Assume that cost for each is equivalent after financial aid is factored in. I'm looking for input which can help me base my decision. Thanks Anandtech 🙂

All other factors being equal.

The cold frigid NE or the sunny/foggy climate of Central California. Hmmmm......

<insert a little appropriate Mama's and Papa's music inserted>

Stanford will have the hottest girls. Cornell will have the best food. You'll be miserable at CMU, unless you're a recluse.

I answered this in another similar thread on this subject. Having gone to both, I would keep it the way it is, Cornell undergrad, Stanford grad. Stanford profs are good, but they have their grad research, and often times their own businesses, so you need to think about where you are on their priority list. Cornell profs are dedicated to undergrad education. Some of them would come to the computer lab and pull all nighters with the students to help us finish design projects. Now that's dedication.
Just don't get the meal plan unless you are willing to gain 20lbs your first year 😉 Cus the food is great.

I went to neither...but I got my BS in CS. I wished I could have gone to Stanford. Oh well...8 yrs of CS down the drain....

I just got my decision from Stanford - wait listed. Better than rejected I guess, but from what I've read and thought about, I think Cornell would be better for me anyway. The distance to Stanford would make it very difficult, and it's not the first time I've heard that Stanford engineering professors don't have much time for their undergrad students. Hopefully my financial aid package from Cornell will be reasonable. CMU only gave me $8k in grants and another $8k in loans. That still leaves $32k + interest to pay per year, ugh

Pittsburgh's a great city. All 3 schools are great. I'd pick Stanford, though, strictly for location if you don't mind being away from family.

All this talk about Ivy schools makes me think about illegal Mexican high schoolers.

wow how expensive is that school? 48k/year? If you didn't say it was undergrad, I would've thought it was a grad/professional school.

Stanford.

But as far as waitlisting goes, stanford doesn't accept alot of people off their wait list so your chances of getting in aren't good.

Carnegie Mellon - Nerd Heaven, don't plan on getting laid ever
Cornell - You get an ivy league education but you'll jump off a cliff just to entertain yourself
Stamford - You'll become a pretentious californian, but you won't care because the girls are pretty and the weather is nice...

dam, that cost more than MIT...

I graduated Cornell in '01. Best four years of my life. It's alot of work (the CS coursework is rough), but it's all worth it in the end. Beautiful campus also, so that's another bonus. You'll meet plenty of nice people, and as a freshmen you get to live in the nice dorms!

my friend did get off of it in 2003 though. it isnt impossible.

Stanford >>>>>

Cornell = fake ivy league, gets laffed at.

CMU = legit, much respect for engineering, but as my friend who goes to CMU says, PITTSBURGH SUCKS MY BALLS.

Stanford. Simply because Carnegie Mellon basically equals Stanford in regards to strength for those programs, yet the Stanford campus is absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention I hear Carnegie Mellon is a very dreary school.

Cornell is a great college, but I could never consider it over CM or Stan.

you sir, are a fool and know nothing about ivy leagues. dartmouth is the ivy that gets laughed at, and even then it's in good clean fun.

and to those naysayers who claim that going to a state school is just as good as going to an ivy, i'd like you to consider those top investment banks and elite consulting firms that don't dedicate any time or effort to recruit from schools other than top universities. sure, for most individuals the decision between going to a state school and a top 10 doesn't matter too much, but top universities offer opportunities only available to a select few institutions. argue all you want, but there's a reason why certain schools have sustained top rankings for hundreds of years, have been able to charge an arm an a leg for hundreds of years, and still recruit top talent and get them to pay an arm and a leg for their education.
