This isn't for me, I'm in college, and I didn't concern myself with this stuff during admissions because I didn't apply anywhere I considered challenging. Anyway...

Suppose person A wants to get into school B. Person A has a 2.4 GPA, and a 1080 SAT. School B's SAT 25-75 range is 1130-1280, no GPA data given, but 43% of the students were in the top 10% of their high school class. Person A just visits school B today, and decides they really want to go there. Person A is clearly borderline. School B uses a rolling admissions process. IMO it is too late for someone borderline to be accepted to the main campus.

1) Am I correct in assuming that?
2) How does one inform Person A of this without hurting their feelings?

I think you are right...

And I have no idea how to tell them... just say taht they have restrictions and if theperson is under the restictions there is small to no chace of getting in.

I think they'll ask you to come in for an interview to make their decision..

If you ( person A ) does well on the interview I believe you might have a chance of getting in to that school

Well, there is always doing the Community College thing. I know it is not glamorous, but plenty of people transfer to good schools from CC's. I have close friends that have transferred to UCD, UCLA, UC Berkley, etc from CC's.

Well, it isn't their only choice, person A is interested in a similar, easier to get into school(ok School B is Pitt, this one is Temple), so I doubt they'd go community college, especially since they can't wait to get out of their house(the local CC is like right down the street from person A's house)

My advice is although chances are very slim, might as well try. At most you'll be out a little money and time, but better than not trying for it and knowing for sure.

said person had a rough start to high school, alot of family problems that stemmed into terrible grades. 11th grade, and so far 12th grade, didn't go too bad.

any other thoughts?

I would tell them that it might be easier to get scholarship money from a less competitive school. Suggest a community college for two years and then a transfer to their University of choice. Of course, this is all dependent on grades and other activities while they are at a CC.

Is it a public school? How large? Does firend have anything else going for them that would give them special advantage?

That they are applying to? It's Pitt. Public, but not a state school. Yea, its pretty large. Anything else going for them....well....no....no clubs, no musical activities, not particularly athletic

can you rule out whether (a) the person is an underrepresented minority (b) is a legacy applicant or (c) is an athlete that the athletic dept would want to recurit....or (d) that the person has some really special talent?

I feel bad about it too because I told them before if it was hard to get into...at the time, they had no indication of wanting to go there, wasn't even gonna visit, just went to get a day off school. I applied, and was easily accepted, so I gave my answer, which was no, its easy....now they think its easy to get in, I don't know how to say they might not....

well, just offhand, i would say that your friend is going to have a hard time getting in...but that being said, it's not impossible. he should definitely work in something about how he's the first person in his family to go to college (or at least say that his parents didn't go to colege, and it's always been a family dream...etc etc), maybe in a supplemental essay.
