I am the one who should be interviewing the colleges employees, not the other way around. They are the ones making money off of me, not the other way around. I think college interviews are the stupidist things ever, and they accomplish nothing. The only thing the college needs to know about me is my grades so they know I am not going to fvck em over and fail out the first semester.

/end rant

I can't help you with your question, lol

never got interviewed, but almost every friend of mine did

they ask like... why do you wanna go to (insert college name here)

what are your likes/dislikes, what do you wanna do in your life, what are your hobbies

try to have some good pre-made answers :)

College interview? Blegh! Unless they are coming to you, then tell them you can't disturb your academically saturated schedule. I've never been asked for an interview, and I've applied to 4 or 5 colleges and been enrolled at 2 so far. But then again I had a 4.2 GPA going into college, with A.P. classes up the wazoo, and a 3.9 when I transferred colleges, with many hardcore math and science courses. Maybe if you're borderline, then they might want to interview you. Just get the traditional answers ready... "I wanna do good for my community" "I want to make my contribution to society" "My hobbies are" etc.

I hope they laugh at you if you say "I wanna do good for my community" or some similar bullshit. But it works for Miss America.

Ok.... a college interview is basically so the college can get an impartial recommendation for you.... Usually they just hire alumni from your area to interview you, not someone directly affiliated with the school.

So I wouldn't be intimidated by them. They really don't do much. They ask general questions to basically get to know you.... to make your application a little more rounded. Things you left out that you feel are important, like things you participated in and offices you held, why they were important or significant. Things you do for fun. Random crap.

Basically just hold a conversation with them. They'll ask, you answer. Usually you'll get a free coffee or donut or something out of it, so take advantage of that and order a triple mocha latte or something... Just remember that they aren't the ones admitting you, they are just writing another letter of reccomendation for your application.

Edit just to comment on a previous post. Usually elite colleges interview you... Cornell, Cooper Union, and MIT all asked me for interviews. Public colleges don't, and most private don't either.

what they told me at my yale interview:

basically you have a conversation with an alumni member from your area, and then they write up their impressions of you - if you are college material, if you are what that school is looking for, etc. then they send their impressions back to the universities. but i think the interview is a very small part of the overall score and most likely if you're borderline it may push you into being admitted.

be talkative but not too much, don't tell any inappropriate stories, dress up a tad (like business casual) and look presentable, listen to what the recruiter is saying. it is just like going into an interview - look them into the eye, sound sure of yourself, and be confident. if you have any questions, make sure they're not answered on the school's website (like how much tuition is) so that they know you're serious about going to their school. above all, be relaxed. if you're nervous they can sense it.

give yourself anywhere from 1-2 hours, preferably up to two hours. mine went about an hour and a half.

Maybe they won't interview you at state schools or lower-end private schools, but most elite privates do. I was interviewed by Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Rice, MIT and Princeton. So...yeah. They don't do it because you're borderline...they do it for everyone.

They'll just ask you the standard questions you'll expect to hear. Just answer them truthfully and have some unique questions to ask in return (usually its alumni interviewing you) and you'll be fine. Most admissions don't weigh the interview that highly. It can't really make or break you.

Good luck!

i interview students applying to columbia. for me, it's mainly a laid-back forum for applicants to ask me questions and learn more about the school.
