collections for co-workers

pontifex

one of the people who works at the same company i do had his house burn down yesterday. one of the other people started up a collection to help him out. i don't know the guy at all (he works 2nd shift and out in the factory). I signed the card and gave $5.

do you guys donate money when stuff like this happens? even if you don't know the person? how much do you normally give?

i don't know. like i said i don't know the guy.
i don't know much about homeowner's insurance but does it replace your home and everything in it? i'm sure he would still need some money in the meantime anyway.
also, this is a low income area and these guys are probably only making like $10-12 an hour anyway.

I'll always give money for something like that. A few bucks is worth it to have people like you at work.

We had a guy at our airline get diagnosed with leukemia. He was 19 at the time, and though he had insurance through the company, it wasn't enough to pay his monthly bills which kept spiraling up as his coverage limits were reached.

We took a collection and raised $2500, I donated $100 myself. THis was three years ago. Sadly, he lost his battle on Feb 6th of this year at the age of 22. Poor guy.

yes i would give 20 bucks. when something tragic like that happens donated money to help pay for clothes, food, shampoo... will help out a whole lot.

I don't carry cash, but for something like that, I might make a trip to the ATM, invite his family over for dinner and welcome them to stay as long as they need.

Depending on how well I know a person, I might go as far as to give them my credit card (or take them somewhere) and spring for few sets of clothing or something.

i would ask why he needs donations if they should have homeowners ins

He wasn't ASKING for the damn donations, they were volunteered.

I'm sure they aren't slow about it, but if someone lost their house and had nothing but their car and the clothes on their back, some cash to get some clothes for the next couple days, a hotel, and a hot meal while Insurance does their thing is probably appreciated.

That never covers everything involved. There are a ton of added expenses when suddenly rendered homeless like this.

And to answer the question, of course I would help out. We've fully supported a couple of employees who have lost everything. One to fire, the other to burglery. We also supported the family of an employee who was murdered for over two years until they could get back on their feet.

Voluntary charity is part of the golden rule, and just the decent thing to do.

yeah, it was another co-worker who started the collection, not the guy who lost his house.

some people just have no clue how anything works...

You are a piece of sh!t.

I can't stand some of the negativity I see in the people on this board anymore.

We take collections a lot here if something happens, I usually don't donate because I rarely carry cash.

Sounds like a great place to work. We take up collections all the time, most recently for a co-worker who's husband died suddenly at age 63. Will the money make a big difference in her life? No, but it says we cared enough about her to make the effort, and that we are sorry for her loss.

Yeah I'd throw at least 5 bucks in. Probably since his whole house burned down. I can't even imagine what that's like.

I would have probably gave a few bucks more, but that was nice of you to give either way. doesnt matter if the guy has home insurance or not, he's gonna need all the help he can get
