If prices get so high that operating a gasoline powered vehicle is impractical for a good chunk of people it'll become profitable to develop the technology. Assuming the price of oil continues on it's current track I imagine there'l be a spike in the technology and infrastructre in the next couple of decades.

You're essentially betting that tech will come before everything crashes down. If shit hits the fan before that, then kiss our current way of life bye bye.

We already have electric cars for sale and socket stations in walmarts. We went from almost no space program to landing on the moon in less than 10 years. A reusable space vehicle in less than 20. Why can't we do the same for automobiles and infrastructure?

The world didn't end in the Great Depression, and we're not even there yet.

The people of this country couldn't even take the great depression today, people are such pussies and feel entitled to everything. I fully expect society to go into full meltdown/panic mode if we get even close to great depression conditions.

If it came out tomorrow that they found out that we just passed peak oil, everything would stop working because prices of everything would spike like crazy.

It's not like it's something we can really plan for.
