What's the fact of it being a sub-base have to do with anything? That just tells me you have no clue.

Hee hee - suffice it to say that DoD is not about to pull submarine crews out of their ships and place them on the front lines. The spike in small arms qualification almost certainly has zero to do with any pending military action. Dave is a crusty old (er, I mean seasoned ;)) sailor who has forgotten more about the military than you will ever know.

I agree, I need to get a clue. So, maybe you, can tell me, why there has been a recent increase in weapons training. Also, if it is because of doing gun quals, under what scenerio would a 10X increase in gun qual be related? Under what scenerio(s) would such an increase "normally" occur?

Two things are going on right now. 1. Navy gun quals are good for one year. So anyone who had to get qualified last year to augment security after 9/11, their gun quals are running out. 2. Reserve call ups are normally for 12 months. The Navy called up a lot of reserves to do seciurity work so once again the new Reserve augmentation needs to get qulaified and the other Reservists need to re-qual. Very simple really if you have any idea what you are talking about.

Whatever you say.

It may in fact be too late. This issue will continue to be massaged until election time where a war involved president's coat tails will help Republican candidates in a vital congressional election. Enron and Bush's buddy Lay, Haliburton, CEO pay and reform, the sliding economy, the budget, social issues, campaign finance reform, and everything of any real importance to American life, have all successfully been removed from the news.

What would be really cool is if we could build a Democratic and Republican tower in Washington. Then we could dress up Democratic or Republican volunteers in military outfits and any time one party or the other was completely screwing up and in danger of loosing an election through incompetence they could ask them to jump off and splat on the sidewalk in front of cameras se we could all watch on TV. It would have the same effect, be vastly cheaper and not make enemies all over the world. Actually, instead of volunteers, I think it would be elected members and officials that do the jumping.

I hereby nominate Moonie for whatever federal office would get him in a tower.

Try October at the latest.

The beginning or the end of OCtober?

If Bush intends to consult congress, don't you think he would wait until after this little thing that happens on Tuesday in Nov..

Elections of new congressman may very well change the whole deal......and if he attacks BEFORE the elections...and a good number of reps change.....then bang.....fighting 2 wars....one in Iraq, one in Congress.

McCain and Daschle have recently both stated that a resolution regarding Iraq would be passed overwhelmingly by both parties when/if it does come up...............

Just like to clarify the thread title: C Powell *did not* say it's too late, he said that Saddam only has a few weeks to negotiate.

I don't agree with this war, why do we need to go to war with a country who MIGHT be developing WMD. India made these weapons and yet we didn't invade them. Lets destroy a developing country because we don't like them, and soon they MIGHT hurt us with WMD. I am kinda streching it, but thats the way I see it.

I'm glad many here feel Powell's words hold some weight. He's the most principled member of Bush's cabinet. Yet, he's a politician, under a tight leash, loyal to the Party.

I'm not glad many here seem to think it's now just a matter of deciding when to invade Iraq. Eager to risk American lives and kill Iraqis, are we? Yeah, I know, its all about outsting the defiant Saddum, that pesky evildoor running a country that happens to be over all that black oil.

Iraq has 1/5 the capability it once did and we've been pounding at it for 11 years all the while preventing it from rebuilding its defenses. Hell, it wasn't much of threat even when it did have "the 3rd largest standing army in the world". This War will take only a couple of weeks, give or take a few days to sweep up all the body parts and bleech away the blood.

Don't go to war because "they" "might" have WMD. Agreed.

Enforce the UN sanctions against Iraq. Sure...who's gonna do it? Um...I see the USA in the back with thier hand raised saying "me me me me me!"
