you shoud alway charge more for what it cost you to ship.
if everyone is like you, no one would be making any money except the post office :D
cost you 3 charge 5, cost 1 charge 2, cost 5 charge 8 and as long you ship something fast and they get it soon, buyers will be pleased even if you are a bit high on shipping. some ppl are cheap and aren't willing to pay what you are asking for at ebay so this will at least help to cover it up some.

<< If they keep raising rates it'll soon be cheaper to hand deliver it.......

It's making it harder to sell low-end stuff on ebay. Nobody is going to pay $5 to ship a $4 item. (well almost no one <G>)

Getreal, perhaps you are not paying a surcharge is because you have a business account. However if you just call them to your house to pickup a package, UPS charges for a one time pickup, which costs $3. I don't see a way this can be avoided with them unless you have a account for which in order to be cost effective you would require shipping items offen. I ship things like once a week, so for me I guess a account would do no good.

I would never send something 5lbs or more USPS, it's too expensive. I found FedEx ground the best service to use. It's often cheaper than UPS and unlike UPS (who play football with ground packages, I swear that almost all my ground packages and even a few air get to me in a sorry condition), many of my customers and me included get FedEx ground in excellent condition.
Yes I love the condition of the packages I get from USPS and they used to be so prompt. But lately they have given me grief. One or two of my packages are taking two or more weeks to get there, leaving me with very unhappy customers. In fact I just sold to someone who I sent one package priority and three days later one media mail and they already have the media mail package and it's over one week. I also do not trust confirmation delivery anymore as they sometimes forget to scan things in at the end point.

BTW get to know your UPS or FedEx driver. Like my mailman they get x-mas chocolates and a nice hello, they tend to remember you. I often tell them to leave things a certain place and they oblige.

I agree USPS has been shipping things very slowly. I realize mail during xmas is slow, but packages were averaging 2-3 weeks for priority mail around here. That's just ridiculous. I actually had some USPS boxes shipped to me via parcel post that got here the same time, which makes me believe that priority mail was going ground as well.

However, I turned this to my benefit by shipping half of all my packages (i sell on ebay) by express mail. 75% of them did not make it in time which means instant full refunds! Those jokers should have rescinded their money back guarantee on express mail during xmas as I swear it's so unreliable it's laughable. Remember folks, turn a bad situation into a good one for ya..

considering how much fuel is used in shippin' stuff from here to there u'd think usps is saving a bundle considering how many mail trucks they have that deliver to u everyday. gas price fell from $195 a few months ago to $1.22 at my local shell, of course usps fedex adn such have their own special gas facilities

and i know why the USPS loses so much money. my friend used to work there, starting pay is $13 an hour first of all yet they are always understaffed.

OVERTIME pay is 150% which is nearly $20 an hour, and my friend when he worked there would ALWAYS have overtime pay because they are always understaffed. the irony, they are understaffed which is why it costs them more, if they hired more people it would actually cost them less!

note that the USPS because it already has an established route to each home, it costs very little to do "home" service, the problem is their employees are overpaid yet there are not enuff of them.
