What is the real differences and does the Flu shot help with both or just the Flu

My grandmother was lucky enough to get the Flu shot but this whole week has been in bed sick, but what seems like just a cold, coughing and stuff and feeling tired.
 
The flu shot doesn't help with the cold virus... there are far too many permutations of it for any vaccine to be effective against it. Influenza however, can be targeted, thus we have the shot available.
