If you can go to some local shop on the pricewatch.com list, you may be able to get it a new for $5 - $7. Even newegg has it for $9+4 shipping. Therefore this deal only work if you must have a floppy drive ship to you.

Go to other sites (jumpondeals, gotaplex, etc) to find a $5 off $10 link for overstock.com. Fill out the form and add the 1.44M floppy drive without Bezel (14.00). 5 off will appear on check out and free shipping right now.

1. Beware this is a refurbished drive
2. Beware its without Bezel, so use it only for cases that cover them
3. Be quick, cause only 11 units left (if the web page is accurate)

Why is this cold?

Anyway, I have not used a floppy in years. With CD-RWs and transferring files on the net, Steve Jobs is still a true visionary.

I agree, i recently built a machine and still have no idea whether the floppy works. I stole it out of an old rig and never have needed to test it in this one. What's the point CD's are faster.

The hot deal is that Intel will be phasing out FDD, PS/2 and serial in the near future on mobo specs :)

...Hmmm that is contrary to Intel's comitment to their OEMs that states that they will support these interfaces through at least 2012. The USB interface will disappear or involve in to a more stable interface before the PS/2 and serial are eliminated from Intel mobos.

Isman,
if you think this is a Cold deal, (which I'm assuming from your thread title) why are you posting it?

along these lines, does anyone know of a way to make the floppy drive icon completely disappear from My Computer in Win9x/ME? Even with no floppy installed, you still get the A: drive icon....

You have to either disable the floppy disk controller in your MB BIOS or disable the floppy controller in the Device Manager within Windows. Either way, the A drive will disappear from My Computer/Explorer.

Exactly, it was MS who was sued by Apple for "borrowing" the look and feel of the Macintosh OS for Windows 95. I still have the original Macintosh, the first usable GUI interface for a personal computer.

I still need a floppy for BIOS flashing and the occassional sneaker-net/snail mail document transfer.

And it makes my wife feel so much more secure when she can hold a copy of her electronic document in her hand. Not to say that she doesn't usually lose the floppy in 4.333 seconds anyways.

Actually, $9 isn't bad. I had to replace one once, got a used one at a computer fair for $5. New prices at fair were $10-15. C*mpUSA wants $19 for them, but that's highway robbery (look at what they charge for an IDE cable the next time you are there-its worse).

actually i had this strange problem the nobody probably has heard of. When i was installing windows 98 the the install would halt after the intialize setup screen. I did this 10 times and wouldnt work. I didnt have a floppy drive in the system and it was disabled in the bios. but when i put one in the system win98 installed without a problem. So floppy drives are still important, CD burners and crap out, and email and internet can go down but the floppy drive is here to stay, sorry mr. jobs
