My dad (with EE and ME bachelors) got one of these from my Gramps for Christmas. He was pretty impressed with the design but the one he got definately isn't for ultra fine soldering and he didn't have any solder on hand to test it. I'll ask him if he's had a chance to give it a try.

My Weller soldering iron does the trick for me..takes a little while to warm up, though.

Edit: In other words, I have no idea. :p

I already have a soldering iron I got from radioshack.

but it's such a hassle to take it out, plug it in, make sure it doesn't touch anything that can burn, and waiting for it to heat up.

the cold heat seems like the coolest idea ever since the invention of birth control pills...

You heard correctly. I had one, but threw it away after I realized it was only useful to solder 20 ga. or smaller with lots of space around it. (Because that happens a lot in the real world:p)
It is a pretty neat to watch, but is really only practical in a handful of uses. (headphone repair, larger circuit boards, again, not too many of those floating around.)

It's a piece of crap. Don't waste your money.

It's only good for soldering larger items or smaller things with plenty of room around them.

Pretty much worthless for the most part.

when I worked at radioshack about a year ago they had them there- u could always try it out and return it if u dont like it.

I got one and I thought for $20 it was pretty good.

The tip that comes with it is made for big jobs, you can buy smaller tips though.

Pretty much a good iron to have when you need to do a quick patch job and don't want to wait for something to heat up. But if you have a nice iorn or need to do alot of soldering or for really fine jobs, it's not that great.

Don't worry about that, it actually performs as advertised. Of course they don't mention the points I mentioned in my post above.

waste of money.. i tried using it for our senior projects, and gave up on it after 5 minutes.. worthless.. your standard $10 iron from radioshack is much better

The principle is sound (known as "resistance soldering" google will tell you more); but I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the Cold Heat device isn't exactly god's gift to the genre.

It's just a mini arc welder essentially. You basically short the batteries, creating enough heat to melt some solder. Would be useful for car stereo stuff, where plugging in an iron SUCKS. However, for my PS2 mods, it has no use.

i used it, it SUCKS. the idea is nice, but the biuld quality is horrid. I broke the one I used in one sitting. Not to be used for precision soldering. only for hack jobs.

Don't buy it. not worth the hassle at all. a cheapo $20 soldering iron is far superior, and last longer lol.

If you look at the advertisements, you'll see they never solder any small circuit components. They mostly seem to advertise it for simple home repairs, meaning mechanical items. I'd agree that it's a good tool for that purpose, but it I would also agree with previous posters that have indicated it is not good for circuits. I never use the one I got because I only solder circuits, so if that's the intended use I'd stay away.

I've never owned a soldering iron or this product in question, but it totally sucks and you shouldn't get it.
