Hia, well college is around the corner for me and I'm starting to think I wont be able to pull through. I have a horrible memory, and have trouble retaining information. Since high-school I forgot most if not all of 9th, 10th, 11th and parts of 12th grade. I don't remember anything!

If anything I'm a visual learner, I remember hands on experiments in chemistry, i remember, diagrams on boards, but you throw a list of terms infront of me and it will take me hours and hours to remember 20 simple words.. i spent my lunch hour everyday in my senior year, every day with a chemistry teacher working on just chemistry, i come home and study for about an hour a night.. i come back to class for another hour of learning.. i forgot what i learned the night before, and i got D's on all my assignments, and report cards.. and im not slacking off, but wanted to give up all year b/c no matter how much i tried nothing came of it.

Now with the books im going to be buying soon, seeing the 1000s and 1000s of pages that im going to have to read will just make me faint - i swear.. i dont know if i'll be able to handle it...

am i just being too skeptical of college? Is it really that hard to say im screwed? I have a band, a job working 12 hours a week, devorced parents, living at home - switching homes once a week (taking computers with me), and college..

*Taking courses in computer science, waiting until next year when they implement computer software and hardware engineering - where I want my major to be*

Try hard and you'll do fine.

You aren't screwed until the day before the final in a class you never went to.

Get an apartment and play with your band on weekends. Stay away from your parents. You'll be fine, I mean I graduated.

Don't worry about the textbooks. In many courses, you won't even use them.

When I first read the title, I thought you were implying that you were going to blow your school up!!

And it's cold feet. College is easier than you think.

You'll be fine.

On my first college test I made a 32. It was a disaster and I felt out of place and wanted to quit that day. I stuck it out, gave a lot of effort, and ended up making a B in the class. Since then I learned that to be successful, I had to put out the same amount of effort for every class, no matter how hard or easy. More than halfway through now I still go full-time, my GPA is higher than 3.8, work about 25 hours a week, and have a lot of fun too.

It's a mental game. If you think it's insurmountably difficult, you'll have a much harder time than if you just do as best you can.

Also, a lot of college chemistry, for example, is very diagramattical - electron flow, carbanion forms, a lot of the organic stuff is memorizing what happens mechanistically - its not just learning all the ions and elements like you did in high school. Biology too, becomes more like thinking about 3-demensional activity of proteins and DNA and RNA molecules inside the compartments of the cell.

I think you'll do great, broham.

It really depends on what college you're going to. The lower ones, if you went to a half decent high school, the work load will be at the same level. The top ones, prepare to work your ass off.

When buying books for college, do they want specific books bought? or is it a big research project and you buy the book(s) you deem important?

There's plenty of idiots in my college and most seem to be at least passing. I'm pretty dull and I'm gonna graduate in a year. You'll do fine. Sure its a lot of work at times, but if you are able to put in the effort, it's worth it.

btw don't be a chem major

Mold, serious business.
I know. I see there people on TV who are like, "The wall is always wet and gets moldy. I'm watering my lawn and my house twice a day, do you really think it's a problem??" What are they thinking???! Tearing out that wall to get to the insulation and all then environmental suits and stuff is going to cost a fortune!

Your professor will tell you what book(s) to buy.

You aren't a visual learner, that would mean anything you see you learn. You are more hands on. I would suggest a few things:
If you feel like you can't concentrate, get some medicine for ADD. This is only if you think you actually have it.
Go over notes, rewriting in different colors, putting key points on flash cards, relate everything to a physical experience or real world application.
Go to professors office to get help. Even if you are horrible and deserve an F they will give you a C or B if they knew that you tried really hard.

That should help some, but like everybody said, don't panic. You can make it, but it will be very hard for you to get the 3.5 you need in engineering to get a good job. Work hard.

You are supposed to be angst ridden in junior high, not when you are going off to college.

hehe

So grades after college are looked at as well? I didn't know that. I thought you just gotta degree with your profession on it stating just that, you graduated. So aiming for at least a 3.5 is a good goal to get a good job after college? Alrighty then, I hope it isnt as bad as I amped it up to be.
