I am curious to see how big an issue this is...

If you have this problem can you list your mobo , cpu, fsb speed and memory settings....

any other you think is important...like brand of PS or ram

I would like to get an Epox board or Asus and shoot for 150fsb

thanks

I've posed in the Asusboards thread:

I'm positive the Cold Boot Problem has to do with the ATX PS connection. At least in my case I've read this thread from start to finish.

Those who have changed their entire PS found it went away. Thus, reseating the ATX plug to the mobo. I doubt it has to do with the actual PS unit itself, because people with a Antec True 430W are getting cold boot problems right from the beginning. The Antec True PS is the best PS on the market.

Now onto my experience. I bought the ASUS P4PE with a Enermax 431W nearly 2 months ago and I've had absolutley NO COLD BOOT PROBLEMS at all. Until, 2 days ago when I tested an Antec True on my system. I wanted to see the difference in 3.3V and 5V between a Enermax and Antec True. Immediately after installing the Antec, I got my first Cold Boot problem. I remind you this PS is the best money can buy, so rule that out. I changed back to the Enermax and the same problem! My search for an answer began.

Then, I found this thread. Someone suggested reinserting the ATX plug to the mobo. So, I did that. And guess what? NO MORE COLD BOOT PROBLEMS. I'm convinced the Cold Boot issue has to do with the ATX connector on the mobo. Try it and see if it works for you.

EPoX 4PEA+
upon changing BIOS settings or a cold boot, the computer doesn't start. I have to turn it off, wait 5-10 seconds and fire it up again, sometimes I have to do this 3 times.

doesn't matter what the settings are, overclocked or not.

the issue sucks, but the board works just fine, and i barely ever reboot so i only have it deal with this once a week at most.

P.S.
Neal, my system is running rock solid with +.5 Vcore adjustment @ 2.7GHz
This thing will do alot more than 150 FSB I am sure (1.8A Northwood)

I'm really surprised to hear some of these cold boot issues, as I've maybe encountered one or two instances of such an issue. Even then I wasn't sure if it was a mistake or something else.

Antec 400W, always used this PS, used it in my last 2 Athlon rigs (no probs) and now the new p4.

what a silly issue.. at least it's nothing that really bugs me.

I have the same problem on a AOPEN p266 Pentium III mb. It started after I added a second hard drive to my computer. I have reseated the atx power connector to the motherboard at least twice no help. If you let the computer stay on aprox 10 seconds and then press the reset button it will boot normally!!! EVERY TIME!!! Specs as follows Cool Power 400W P4 p/s, Aopen AX37Plus mb, 512 mb ddr 266 ram (both micron), 2 western digital 30 and 60 gb 5400 rpm ata 100 hard disk drives. I heard a rumor that the two western digital drives could be my problem but not enough info to say either way!

It sounds like a lot of Intel 845PE chipset Mobos are experiencing this problem. Although, I'm convinced it's a ATX plug issue with the ASUS P4PE. At least with my board. I reseated the plug and the cold boot problem went away instantly. Others have done the same. Weird if you ask me.

I'm a sufferer! Cold boot fails every time (incl. after BIOS changes), PSU off & on again 2-3 times normally cures it.

My system:
BE7 (CG BIOS), P4 2.4B, XMS3200 512 C2, Leadtek A280 GF4 Ti4200 128, Thermaltake SilentPower 360W PSU, Maxtor 5400rpm 30Gb, LG CDRW.

I'll try reseating the power connectors and see if it helps. Any other suggestions?

Nearly forgot to mention: nothing overclocked (yet...).

P4B533 was a KICK ASS mobo when I used it.. I used 2... love them both.
kinda wish I'd gotten one for myself actually!!!

It's gotta be the freaking Antec PS
that seems to be a common part among cold boot problem people
I have the Antec 400W and I have cold boot issues.
sometimes I gotta power right off and on more than once to get it going.
it sucks, but it's only right off once a week at most.. but still...

It is not just 845PE, I have a 4GEA+ (845GE) and cold boot galore. I have a 1.6A overclocked to 150FSB, 1.6V VCore and 1G of Corsair 3200C2 RAM.

Evan: This is something you could look into your roundup? Something on print from Anandtech is what we need to get their attention. My 4G4A+ had no cold boot issues. I am not very happy with the 845PE/GE chipset.

I have the MSI 845PE MAX and Asus P4PE-L (1.8A at 141FSB and 1.6A at 138FSB), Enermaxes 350 and 431W - NO cold boot problems here. Sorry I couldn't add another cold boot problem to the equation.

Hello All

I have been following this thread concerning the cold boot issue. I have narrowed down my motherboard choice to either the ASUS or the EPOX. But this cold boot issue does scare me. I will have to purchase a new case so I had planned on either the Antec 660AMG or its bigger brother the 1080AMG. I normally have two hard drives, a cd burner and dvd player installed so I was leaning towards the larger of the two. Now I read that the PS by Antec may be part of the problem, not sure what to do. Maybe nforce2 would be better. Though I would like to go Intel.

My planned purchase is for a 2.4B processor and 512mb of corsair PC-3200 ram. So many threads say the PE is good, but seeing Thugs go back to his P4B533 adds additional concern.

Presently I use my computer for office apps, some serious gaming and some photo editing. My son also uses to create three dimensional images. I want to be able to set it up over the break between Christmas and New Years but the shipping window approaches fast.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks:);)

Sharpedge, the 845pe is still a chipset I wouldn't hesitate to go for. the cold boot issue is there, but very strangely, from what I can see, is only with certain power supplies.
if it wasn't for that issue, i would have zero complaints thus far about the chipset. it's fast, and it seems stable, overcocks just fine too.
the P4B533 is a kick ass mobo.. that's the reason Thugs went back to it... no one will deny that mobo is a workhorse!! i love my EPoX 845pe board now that i've figured out the cold boot BS..

I wouldn't hesitate to get the EPoX or the Asus 845PE board.

No problem. and to further help your decision more, I have just built 2 systems using Albatron 845pe boards with zero cold boot issues at all. they are excellent boards, and have a built in 3COM 10/100 NIC!

I solved my cold boot issue with my P4PE by moving my 512mb stick of Corsair XMS2700 to the slot farthest from the CPU (originally in the closest one). NP since I changed memory slots (fingers crossed).

I think the cold boot issue has a lot to do with PS Units. It may very well be a memory issue, as well. But, I've seen a lot of people solve it with changing the power supply. I never had the issue until I tested an Antec True PS in my system. I immediately put back in my Enermax and instantly solved. No cold boot problem anymore. I would be curious to see what PS people with this issue are running!
