Wow, never seen a can blow like that before. I've had cans freeze when left in the car, always bulged the bottoms out without exploding (a few leaked when thawed). Did manage to blow up a glass bottle in the freezer last year, man that was a mess, fragmentation grenades have nothing on bottles of strawberry soda for making thousands of pieces of shrapnel in a big goey red mess.

5-10 minutes for cooling as opposed to half an hour?

get a bowl, put ice in it, put cold water in it, slam in the coke. too much effort?

if you need it cold fast, use crushed ice and cold water.

A bowl, a couple handfulls of ice and a shot of tap water is too much trouble? I bet you whine about having to breathe.

I can't believe there are people that haven't heard of pops exploding in the freezer.

You guys must not have very cold freezers or something. :confused:

Couldn't you put ice in a bowl then pour some salt on it, then put the can in? How well would that work?

We accidentally leave sodas in the freezer all of the time and I don't recall one ever exploding like that. Interesting...

I've had some leak badly but never exploded the way that one did! I always put mine in the ice cube bin, so if I do forget it and it pops & leaks, it's easy to clean up.

On a related note, I picked up a case of mountain dew last winter and left it in the back of the truck. Got uber cold that night and half the case exploded or leaked. Thank god it was a pickup truck ... a quick hose down fixed it. Would've been a disaster in a car trunk or back of an SUV.

You would still need some water in the mix. When the two are mixed together the entire mixture stays at the same temperature until it's finished melting. All that happens when you add salt is that the freezing point is lowered so the water gets a little colder. I doubt it would make the popo get colder faster.
