Coin card: steal other peoples credit cards?

Hypothetical - but what if I were say a waiter, I bought a coin card.

then customer gives me a real credit card to pay

then i swipe his card and then duplicate his card using my coin card

customer goes home after meal thinking everything is good

I go home, edit the customer card picture in my phone in photoshop to change name to mine

I go shopping later on using customer card on my coin card?


Where did I go wrong here - can this happen?

If you're inclined to do such things you don't need a Coin to do it. It's being done thousands of times every day all over the US.

Hell, you don't even need to be there to do it. Skimmer on the ATM and walk away never to return. Presto, card numbers & PINs delivered cellularly to your waiting server.

Coin doesn't make the situation any worse than it already is.

Well it does make it easier for the average consumer. So he does have a point.

I guess it could be easier. I dunno if a $100 Coin card will be easier than picking up some credit card scanner off eBay or however bad guys get those things. Heck, I see Square reader being sold at the checkout stand at Starbucks and I imagine it might be possible for someone to hack one of those to skim cards. *shrug*

Really when I go to a restaurant, I'm more concerned that my food is being prepared probably than I am that the waiter is going to skim my card. I guess it could happen,I guess it could be done easier with newer technology. But I'm still checking my burger for spit first.

yeah people already do similar things. All I am saying is that this new gadget will make it ridiculously easy, and very legitimate looking when you spend it in person on someone else's credit card - because you will look exactly like everyone else who is spending on the coin card gadget.

Coin will supposedly have measures in place to prevent you from adding cards that aren't yours to your account but no details yet.

In order to add a card at all to begin with, you have to take a picture of the card itself from within the Coin app before you swipe it, so it won't be as easy as stealthily swiping a card quickly like a skimmer can do.
