In case you missed this review of the Z370 Gaming 7 board board, he mentions the fan and adds the following:
  • fan is connected via system fan pinout and it can be disconnected or configured in BIOS
  • fan did not start once during the review stress tests, which include overclocked AVX loads

Makes me glad that I went with asus after watching that. Granted asus has pushed out A TON of bios updates for there boards....I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing though lol. I am glad they are updating it frequently though. I recommend everyone look for bios updates for there boards, as there have been several on the asus side in the last week alone.

Guys, what do you think about VRM temps and Z370 boards? Is there a cool board that still overclocks? I'm looking for a board that let's the CPU get hot (I compare heatsinks and AIO's) and lets me test at sustained peak runs. I use AVX2, for example. Hot VRM's would shorten a MB'slife. If I have to replace something I'll have to do all my tests over again.

The asus strix z370-E gaming that I am using is staying extremely cool with avx and avx2 loads on it. Running it between 4.8 and 5ghz depending on the load. Mining crypto currency 24/7 on this 8700k and gtx 1080 without any issues :)

Get any decent overclocking board and if you are still worried, point a 120/140 fan at it from a few inches away. There is no chance that the vrms will overheat with such a setup.

The problem I have is that this would add to the SPL I am measuring. Each heatsink has its own noise/SPL. I measure that. Any active VRM cooling would add its own noise, not the heatsink's/AIO's noise.

Msi z370 pc pro + 8600k. I overclocked to 4.7 ghz and 4.4 ring cache. Max temp 74, with all case fans on. From time to time it is throtling even thou i pushed tdp max in bios from 95w to 110.
However i dont expect throtling in games, this is just prime stress test.
Voltage is set to 1.2 in bios, and gives the vid to 1.245.

What do you think? Any suggestions for better oc configurations?

To take a screen shot, hit the print screen button your keyboard. Open up paint, hit control V to paste the screen shot. Save the screen shot and upload it to any image hosting site you would like. Then give us a link. Much quicker and easier :) As far as your setup, make sure you are both avx and non avx stable. Run cinebench a few times, run real bench, use intel burn test or linx and prime95 both avx and non avx. If that is all stable and temps are good, try lowering the voltage slightly and rinse and repeat. Find the lowest stable voltage for the overclock you are wanting :)

Ran cinebebch 2 times and intel stress test 2 times. Max temps are with intel stress test @79, prime have 75 and cinebench 65s. Voltage is 1.20 set in bios adaptive, vid in hw monitor is max 1.245. Overclocked to 4.7 on cores and 4.4 on cache. On prime and intel stress test i have power throtling, as i set 110w only.

What you guys think?

Well I thought that since this is the Coffeelake benchmarks thread, I should post benchmarks here and not in the builders thread! xD

Here is a benchmark from old. The Crysis 1 classic benchmark on GTX 1070@2Ghz for both runs.




Hint: the important difference is not just the 37% higher average. It's the 83% higher min. :)

This benchmark is dated for sure, but it's interesting to see how old code, responds to six years of IPC and other architectural improvements, is it not? :)

And speaking of Cinebench above, here are my 8600@5Ghz, along with CPUz bench. Also my old Cinebench of my 2500k@4.8Ghz. Ram is 3200,14-14-14-35, memory controller at 4.5Ghz, voltage +50mV with offset, ends up around 1.312v-1.328v.

CPUz of the 2500k is old and as such, not comparable. I will make a new one once I recommission the system.

I have that board, and, while I *am* water cooling the CPU, I probably have bad case airflow due to it. I haven't had that fan come on, even with the CPU package using 180W (not for extended periods of time though).

edit: Also, yes, you could just unplug the fan. It's just a normal fan header on the motherboard. The default profile (via "BIOS") doesn't turn it on until 87 or 88C anyway. It's hard to tell exactly since there are only hash marks every 10C on that screen.

I can't even grasp what they're doing with this 8th gen. A month after Z370 launch, and Z390 already spotted in the wild.
