Coffee!!!

Modeps

Lifer
My boss and the marketing guy decided to order a bunch of gourmet coffee to send to our clients as a thank you give for Christmas. Welp, it came. There are about 20 boxes sitting in the development office (my and two other guys' office) and I'm just salivating from the smell that is emanating from the boxes. Why must they torture us!?

I don't buy coffee anymore unless it's being made by a cute girl in a coffee shop. 😉

By the way, I read somewhere that coffee can heal bruises from rollerblade accidents. Cheers!

1. Find the boxes marked ?Jamaican Blue Mountain?.
2. Replace these with a lesser coffee.
3. Smuggle it home.
4. Enjoy.

What??? It must not have been REAL Blue Mountain or extremely stale or something. Kona is delicious as well, but maybe you should try getting some Blue Mountain somewhere else.

Well, I'm not a coffee connoisseur. My tastes in coffee are pretty basic, although I'm trying to refine it. It could be my crap-o-matic Gevalia coffee maker is making it taste bad too. Maybe I'll try it again...

I'm just saying, if you can appreciate the flavor of Kona, you should certainly appreciate JBM. Just so you know, the pure stuff usually runs about $50/lb retail, so I'm just wondering what they had at Costco.

I don't drink coffee because I expect it to be some sort of orgasmic experience akin to sexy young virgins dancing around on my tongue.....I drink it to wake my ass up in the mornings.....

I drink it for both reasons. I only get the, erm, tastily described kind of coffee on the weekends when I make my own espresso and/or cappuccino though.

IMO Kona is wildly overrated - it just strikes me as a very ordinary, milder-than-average brew. It's decent but nothing special IMO.

Generalizing Kona, or any coffee for that matter, is akin to considering a Cabernet Sauvignon without reference to the appellation, the winemaker, or the vintage. Not all Konas are worthy of the price, but many of them are absolutely fantastic. It depends on the crop, the grade, the region, the roast level, the quality of the roast, when it was roasted, how the green was stored before it was roasted, and most especially, how you prepare the coffee. I'd feel comfortable in saying that 80+% of coffee consumers don't know how to properly prepare a cup of coffee.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and find a roaster who knows how to properly roast Kona and follows the crops.

Off topic....but hey......Did you see the new coffee place that is going in on Cherry Street just East of Peoria....there where the old Sound Warehouse was...next to Jason's Deli. Place looks freaking huge...

Yeah, Espresso Milano. I hope they pull a legitimately northern Italian espresso, but I'm not holding my breath. It looks like it will be a nice addition to Cherry Street no matter what. Cafe Cubana right behind Jason's is really good too (well, it was anyway--I haven't been there in a long time), but it doesn't get any business.

Doubleshot on 18th and Boston is, imo, the best coffee shop in town; well, except for what I produce at home 😉

I used to roast my own coffee. I've purchased good quality Kona and Jamaica Blue Mountain and brewed it during the peak flavor. I agree with DonVito, it's very over-rated for what you get. I prefer coffees costing 1/4 or less than Kona (I'll take a good Kenya over it any day.) IMO, people buy Kona or JBM for it's snob appeal and not flavor.

The stuff sitting in our office is called Omar. I guess it's a fundraiser type thing normally... any good?

I'll have to stop in Doubleshot sometime....it's on the way between here and the hospital...well sorta...I'll have to give them a try on my way back and forth some day. I haven't been in Cubana in a LONG time. Last time I was in there the coffee tasted like ass and when I complained about it the girl working there more or less told me "tough sh1t" and I had to get a manager in order to get a refund.

If you prefer a Kenyan then you obviously wouldn't enjoy a Kona; they have entirely different flavor profiles. It's also likely that you roasted your Kenyan darker unless you liked being overwhelmed with acidity, so that contributes to the difference as well.

Again people, just because it doesn't suit your tastes doesn't make it overrated. Kona got its reputation for a reason, but it's also those reasons that allows budding entrepreneurs to perptrate inferior Kona on the consuming public. Just keep that in mind; caveat emptor.
