Coffee or Cola?

I drink primarily cola, and would like to stop drinking as much. Should I try switching to coffee, or is that even worse for you? What are the advantages/disadvantages? Drinking just water is not an option at this time. Oh, and for everyone's benefit I've added two poles.

Depends how much sugar you put in your coffee, but most likely cola is worse.

I feel your pain, though. Trying to cut down myself after being berated repeatedly by my dentist...

Coffee (straight black) is around 10 calories. Soda is around 150 or so for 12 ounces and it's 100% sugar. Bad for the teeth, and bad for the belt line. Of course there's diet soda, but depending on how thick of a tin foil hat you have there concerns of artificial sweeteners.

If you simply want a quick a buzz, coffee all the way.
If you want something that isn't water to drink, go for tea. You can do it hot or cold, typically doesn't need sweetening, and it's a hell of a lot easier to make on your own.

Yeah, about the sugar I just found this info:

Coca-Cola owns both Coke® and Minute Maid®
juices, so they are happy to sell either of these
beverages in schools. Kids don't care whether
they drink a pop or juice because they both taste
good. That is, juice has the same and often
more sugar than soft drinks. A 12-ounce can or
bottle of Coke® contains 9 teaspoons of sugar
(equal to 39 grams of carbohydrate). The same
amount of unsweetened apple juice has at least 10
teaspoons of sugar (equal to up to 46 grams of
carbohydrate). Unsweetened orange juice
contains the same amount of sugar as a cola. A
?sports drink? such as Gatorade® Thirst
Quencher has 5 teaspoons of sugar and
Powerade® Regular has 7 teaspoons, but
Gatorade® Energy Drink has about 19 teaspoons
of sugar, and a whopping 310 calories, in that 12-
ounce bottle. Water from the water fountain has
no sugar and zero calories.

I've noticed things are starting to get a little tight around the waistline, but I'm not sure whether the fried chicken, cola, or copious amounts of alcohol is the primary culprit. Unfortunately, it's probably all 3 🙁

and pop is not? both contain caffeine, the substance that makes it 'addicting'.
no difference can be noted in 'addiction' between the two.

and btw, who the hell voted that coffee is worse? idiots.

coffee, in moderation, is actually good for you. moderate caffeine consumption is not harmful, and the antioxidants in the coffee is beneficial. So, in moderation, coffee is good. There is no way to make pop good.
I love pop but have cut back extremely, as I need to keep myself hydrated. I'll enjoy a can or something like a bottle of IBC rootbeer every now and then, say with pizza or something.

the amount of coffee I sometimes consume, however, is probably not always good. Most days, if I have coffee, it's a cup or two at most. But when I make espresso, sometimes I'll have 2-4 doubleshots. That's definitely pushing the healthiness of it (and only because of the caffeine. the antioxidants are still good. and the way I look at it, I'm strengthening my heart. 🙂 )

which is worse for you?
Cola

I drank cokes 90% of the time until a couple of years ago when I noticed an odd craving....for water. I used to couldn't stand plain water, but now it is what I drink 75% of the time. I feel better now and have lost some weight too.

I remember in school as a kid, the teacher put a tooth in a glass of coke to make a point, and the coke ate the tooth away after a few days.

I have always believed sugared pop and drinks that everyone consumes now a days, especially children, is the main cause in the dramatic rise of diabetes.

Ooooh, I could go for an IBC.

Wait a minute, wouldn't the carbonation disappear after the first day or so?

And also, apparently, citric acid in Orange Juice is more acidic than Coke. Interesting.

talk about selling fear.
sugar is not the enemy to end all enemies. a balanced nutrition is what is needed. a glass or two or three of orange juice a day (my simply orange jug says 8oz contains 22g of sugar, so 12oz has 33g.) is not going to make a kid fat. It's the ho-hos, the fruit snacks, etc etc.
same goes for stuff like powerade and gatorade. you NEED that sugar, it's part of a balanced package of salts and sugars that help keep you hydrated and provide a small burst of extra energy. and if you are drinking powerade, likely you are using that sugar, or are merely regaining if you are like me and drink sports drinks AFTER I'm finished working out (due to not being able to drink things while doing PT in the morning, besides water from a water fountain inbetween things).

Cola, much lower pH. I get acid reflux from it when I drink too much. Coffee can be almost be the same as water for me, no reaction from the stomach except for a little bit quicker craps.

same. I crave water or powerade or juice all the time. pop is rarely what my body is asking for. but then again, when your active, you tend to thirst for something that you need, like water. and wow, do I love water all of a sudden.
and yea, you sound just like what I was like all of high school, except 90% of the time is being conservative, it was more like 99% of what I drank. Not a good route, and somehow I managed to escape highschool with only a little gut on my skinny frame.

"Coca-Cola contains acids (such as citric acid and phosphoric acid) which will eventually dissolve items such as teeth (given enough time), but so do plenty of other substances we commonly ingest (such as orange juice). The concentration of acid in these products is so low that our digestive systems are easily capable of coping with it with no harm to us."

Coffee has a laxative effect on some people? 😕 I only get an annoyed gut if I end up consuming too much dairy (lactose) with it. 😀

Coffee (or tea) is much better for you than cola. I lost a lot of weight by quitting soda, cutting back on juice, and switching to tea and coffee as beverages of choice. I prefer tea to soda anyway on basis of flavor and thirst quenching.

I dunno. Usually whenever I've had coffee I get the visit from Mr. Turtle not too soon afterwards, but then again I only drink coffee once in a blue moon. Either that or a slight tummy ache. I'm definitely pushing my luck though, as I've just had a second cup...
