coffe drinkers who make their own coffee

i just use tap water. our city water is pretty good.
if we were where we were living before, i could tell the difference in purified and tap water

I use tap water because as far as I'm concerned, tap water and filtered water are the same. I know at the technical level I am wrong, however, they are both clear and they both taste exactly the same (as in, have no taste.)

That's completely and utterly wrong. Try making two cups of tea, one with filtered and one with unfiltered water. The unfiltered will have scum on the top and the filtered won't. They will also taste very different.

It's less noticable with coffee in my opinion but there's still a metallic tang to the unfiltered stuff.

must just be your local water then. ive done both, and noticed no "scum" or difference in taste.

shimsham is right. There are some areas in this country with absolutely great tap water. It's positively bizarre. I was very surprised at the differences.
