Running Vista 64. Caught in the debate if I should install a codec pack (and if so which one) or just manual install a bunch of codecs for it.

Put me down as very much against codec packs.

MPC
FFDshow
Real Alternative
Quicktime Alternative

If a video can not be played using one or a combination of one of the above, then I really didn't need to see it anyway.

Codec packs are buggy and alot of the codecs that come with them are unneeded.

FFDShow
Media Player Classic
nVidia Purevideo
Divx

Is pretty much all you need. Unless you encode a lot of music and video, even if thats true. It is better to get the codecs as singles and update as you go.

What is this nvidia purevideo? Does that install with the latest nvidia forceware drivers?

That's what I use. I used to not like packs, but CCCP has proven itself to me, plus is "officially supported" by many groups that release fansubs.

CCCP works for me. Uses FFDShow for most everything. I think the big key here is not to mix and match codec packs. I have to fix machines all of the time that "can't play movies". Lo and behold, three different codec "packs," three different DVD decoders, DivX, and XViD instaled separately, you get my drift...

CCCP, comrade. The first codec pack I've seen that doesn't have to be very carefully installed in order to work.

I will never use a codec pack ever again. Way too much trouble with them over the years to try another one.

I'd much rather just install FFDShow, Quicktime Alternative, Real Alternative and Haali Media Splitter.

You only need the codecs themselves if you want to encode, since FFDShow is just directshow filters.

I've been using CCCP for a few years now, running most everything with Media Player Classic.
