I listen to probably about 50% classical, and about 50% trance. When I'm not coding it's usually about the same proportion.

I find the beat of much trance to really help transpose me into the "zone" (you know what I'm talking about). Really dynamic music causes me to lose my concentration, so I generally stick to classical music in the baroque/classical periods, and ambient type trance.

Ambient stuff for me. I don't code really(except basic web design), but when I'm really trying to focus on something ambient/chill electronic stuff works wonders for me.

I anticipate there being a lot of references to trance/ambient/electronica/whatever, so for those coders who find this helps elicit ludicity, how about a few references to albums? Trance isn't hard to find, but that conducive to such goals sometimes can be.

The "Ambien Chillout Psy" station from Digital Imports works wonders.

I listen to Trance mostly. I can't listen to music with words because they distract me. I end up concentrating more on the words in the music than the coding.

I listen to singer-songwriter rock most often, but also blues, celtic, and (mostly baroque) classical. To me lyrics are no problem, they help distract the emotional part of my brain so it leaves the analytical part alone to work 🙂

Nothing is ideal but techno music is probably the only music that has little to no distraction. Stuff with lyrics in it is a total distraction.

I wonder if intolerance to lyrics changes with experience? I've been out of college for over a decade now.

(i.e. only really 1337 coders can handle them 😉 )
