Code 12 Error - Sound Card

Hi,
I just installed a TV tuner in my new PC. The TV tuner has an internal audio out that connects to the internal Aux-in on my sound card. My PC's onboard sound did not have an available Aux-in, so I purchased a new sound card. When I installed my new sound card I get the Code 12 error (no free resources). I disabled the onboard sound in device manager but I am still not getting any sound out of the new sound card and I still get the Code 12 error. Can someone please help...I've been stuck with this problem for a while.

Have you tried booting without your sound card AND the tuner card?
You obviously have hardware resource conflicts going on.

Please post you system specs and which slots your cards are using.

Hi. No I have not tried booting without the sound card and the tuner.
The Tuner is using PCI slot 1 and the sound card is using PCI slot 2.

System specs:
Gateway GT5056
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
2.00 GHz, 1GB Ram

Check your manual to see which PCI slots share with which other slots and functions. If your mobo has on-board audio, have you disabled it?

I tried looking for that info in the manual but did not find it. I have disabled my on-board audio through device manager.

The listings for the two devices in Device Manager will tell you the resources each card is using and whether it detects any conflicts. If so, try moving one card or the other to a different PCI slot or otherwise manually assigning IRQ's to each device.

Device manager only shows a conflict for my new sound card. It does not show what it is conflicting with. When I go to the resources tab of my sound card properties, it does not give me any options like usual. It just says that the device does not have enough free resources.
I am not sure about how to assign IRQs to devices.

I see from the link that you only have 2 PCI slots.
Remove both cards and boot with the on-board audio disabled.
Then add one card and try again. Do you get the Code12?

What sound card are you trying to install?

I have removed the TV tuner and disabled the on-board audio in the BIOS. I added my new sound card again and now I have no error messages in Device Manager BUT I am not getting any sound. Everything else seems fine, just no sound.

Ok so I'm getting somewhere. I just added the TV tuner back in and connected the internal audio-out from the tuner to the internal audio-in on the sound card. I am now getting sound when I watch TV on the tuner, but not when I am just playing a media file in windows. i.e. the only sound I am getting is when I am watching TV on my tuner.
Any ideas of how I can fix this?

As of right now, all audio is working. However, my PC is freezing every now and then, and when I restart, sometimes the audio won't work at all or just work for the TV tuner. It is not being consistent. Do you think that this is a problem with the actual sound card, or with my setup? I need to know whether to replace the sound card. I'm running a generic sound card with the CMI8728 chip.

OK - pull the sound card and try the on-board audio. You're getting closer!

When I pull out the sound card and enable the on-board audio, the audio works fine. But I need the sound card in because the TV tuner has only an internal audio-out and my onboard sound does not have an internal audio-in. That's the reason why I got the sound card.

1. Onboard sound needs to be disabled in bios. If it is only switched off in device manager it still takes resources. So get into Bios. Disable onboard audio (perhaps there is ac97 entry or just sound or just audio, perhaps under integrated peripherials. anyway look for it in BIOS.
Change, save changes, reboot PC

2. Reinstall drivers for your sound card, reboot PC

3. Check if it works.

4. If it still does not click start-->run, enter msinfo32.exe and hit enter. Then check for resource conflicts.

5. If sound card is involved into any conflicts, move it to another PCI slot. You might have to reinstall driver again. The same applies to TV card. But if the two are in conflict moving one might help better then moving both.
