COD4 WTF?

I ran windows update, and installed a few 'required' updates, none of which were video drivers AFAIK. When the process finished COD4 was royally screwed - getting about 4-10 FPS down from 80+ a few minutes earlier. All other games are fine.

So obviously I ran system restore and reversed the process, then when that didn't work I reverted to 3 days ago, but STILL NO CHANGE! Why isn't it reversing whatever horrible shit it's done to my video system? Why would it do that in the first place? Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

:(

(Vista home premium, 8800GT, Q6600, 4GB memory, all highly tweaked and overclocked but stable)

Again?

Yea I know but nobody will reply in there. I'm sure someone will move it in time and it can sit there for archive purposes...

If you look in the event log you'll be able to see what updates were applied. If a restore of 3 days ago didn't work then it's likely a configuration change that's effected your system rather than file based change.

You can always check/rollback your graphics drivers to make sure you are using the ones you want! :)

What the hell man, you posted this almost 4 months ago in PC Gaming, and most assuredly got answers. You still have the same/similar problem 4 months later, and are just now asking again?

Not really, considering you don't even know how to post in the appropriate forum :) Like he said, looks like you got tons of information/advice when you posted it in the proper forum.

Oh FFS - it is quite clear the issue was NOT resolved in that thread, this is not exactly the same issue anyhow since I didn't update video drivers this time, only other updates, and why the hell shouldn't I post again? God knows I've devoted enough days and hours to answering other peoples' damn stupid questions.

If I'm going that far I'll do a clean reinstall and make absolutely sure - all my files are on a seperate disk anyway.

What I'm really after is some kind of insight into what exactly has happened here - actually more of an OS question than a gaming one, for all the wrongforum nazis.

Did you check the COD4 support forums? I would think if it's related to the Windows Update that it would cause issues for a whole bunch of people.

I personally think the "All highly tweaked and overclocked but stable" says it all - I would not expect long term stability from a system that is overclocked.

Yea you'd think so wouldn't you. Maybe I'm not searching for the right terms...

Well it runs 12 hours of Prime95, 30M SuperPI, looping 3Dmark, etc. It's stable.

Besides I don't think it's a stability problem - it's a software problem. I guess it's possible an unstable system could corrupt files during the windows update but I'm pretty sure that's not what happened.

@yuchai - clocked down, ran driver sweeper, reinstalled video drivers (190.38 WHQL) to make sure of no corruption. No change.

As in reset the jumper and start from scratch? Not exactly - I loaded a slower config in BIOS though. Didn't help. Fairly sure it's a software problem.
