I wont ever do that much gaming ever again, it was addicting. Now that I am commander, its like... eh..... I do have a golden desert eagle sidearm though! Also that overkill perk is ridiculous!
Oh and that map, "shipment" You get the P90 sub machine gun, sonic boom, 3x frags, and martyr and you will be basically 3-4 kills per death. LOL throw them nades!

That map is crazy with 32 people. It is addicting. I keep trying for the next level and next thing you know it is 3 hours later.
I noticed I do much better on the <50ms ping servers. I played on 130ms server and was doing terrible. Is a 130ms ping really that bad?
think the sniper rifles suck? play on hardcore servers.
if you're playing normal mode, expect the .50 caliber sniper rifle to suck, amazingly you won't always get your 1 shot kills unless you aim for the head. Ridiculous indeed, but hardcore mode fixes that.

I hate that I cannot get a 1 shot kill with my barret, this is why I use G3 + dot sight, its about 10x better than a sniper rifle.
All last night I had.... 3x grenades, UAV jammer and extreme conditioning(run longer). I just ran around with my P90 going solo and knifing people. I probably killed about 30 people per game.

Once you get perks, do you have to enable them or do the work right away?
I just started playing and got the last stand (pistol as you get killed) but can't figure out how to use it.
I haven't gone into the Class setting to set anything up.
I am a Sargent and always use the SAW so I have lots of shots.

1. Know the maps
2. Fire in bursts (smg's can kill people across the map if you do this)
3. Aim down the sights if you don't have the steady aim perk
4. Shoot through walls
5. Use your damn radar - it gives you an incredible advantage if you use it
6. If you're close to an enemy and run out of ammo, just run at them and stab 'em - switching weapons takes too long if you're only a few feet away.

I'm talking about UAV, really. It can tell you exactly where to shoot someone through a wall. Or whether someone is coming up behind you.

The SAW is good at medium to long range. If you are pitted up against someone at close range with a Sub-Machine gun or Shot Gun, you're going to get in trouble. So for me, it depends on the map. In-door maps are the worst to use a machine gun.
Close range combat, you need to learn how to aim from the hip. Takes a little practice, but that extra time will help drastically. You also have to be running a lot to avoid long range contests.
Adjust mouse sensitivity! To loose and you'll be spraying everywhere and it will be hard to quick-turn and shoot. To low, and your quick reaction time will be trumped from sluggish movement and it will also be harder shooting moving targets at a distance.

Here's my suggestions for improving your base skill - though perhaps not your score for a while.
1) Avoid hardcore - when any weapon kills in one bullet there's no motivation to improve aiming and tracking, you can simply spray in the general direction and often get the kill. The same goes for the stopping power perk. While you're going to struggle for a while because you have to hit people quite a bit to kill them, you will improve your ability to maintain aim, as well as avoid damage.
2) Train your movement - it's important to be able to move unpredictably and avoid fire; there's plenty of times when you will get flanked or outgunned and need to get away. I suggest playing rounds where you only try to knife people, getting in close like that means you have to dodge well.
3) Train your aim - Get in the habit of pulling the trigger for no more than 1 to 1.5 seconds, or use the M14 or M16 to restrict yourself to single bursts. With good control of your firing you can use just about any weapon at long range. You have no idea how much whining you hear when you knock down a sniper with a pistol, it really feels good.
4) Learn weapon accuracies - Load up a local game and find yourself a sign or barrel or what not that you can target from a long range. Practice hitting it while aimed, from the hip, crouching, and moving. The goal is to learn the firing pattern of the weapon, and how well it handles during movement and from the hip.
5) Learn to hear - Admittedly COD4 doesn't have the best of sound engines, compared to a game like FEAR where I could play with my monitor off and get an even kd ratio on pubs, COD4 I can only give rough direction for sounds. But it's still there. A good sound card and pair of headphones are important. After that, try just closing your eyes during a game, and listening, try to follow the sounds and every so often open your eyes to see how well you're doing. You'll look like a complete retard doing it, but eventually you'll be able to hear people coming up from behind and avoid getting jumped.
As for mouse binds - I use wheel click for reload, side 1 for ironsight toggle, side 2 for scoreboard, and the wheel lean for view lean. I use WASD movement, and bind sprint to E, grenade to Q, and swap weapon to 2.

I notice that a lot more servers are hardcore now, I avoid hardcore, so that means I play much less now.

Really? I like hardcore - you have to avoid staying out in the open and need to use your radar effectively to stay alive.

I just got this game too. Free for all is pretty fun, but team deathmatch with more than 20 people is just stupid. The bigger maps just turn into shooting at brown blobs a few pixels wide at extreme distance and hoping it's an enemy and not a rock. Sometimes it's not even that, you're just shooting randomly in the general direction of the enemy. Then there are the high-ranked people calling air strike after air strike, jerking off to their own kill streaks. Not knowing the maps blows asshole, since not only do you go 10 deaths without seeing a single enemy, but you don't even know where the enemy is supposed to be coming from.

I made it to commander in about 3 or 4 days. I guess probably about 20 -> 25 hours or playing. I've never been that great at multiplayer games but found COD4 to be real easy. Lately I haven't been so great, but I've been playing hardcore maps. I used the G3 when I played the normal maps. With stopping power it kills real quick.
As for mouse buttons 3-5, I don't even have them. Unless button 3 is clicking the scroll wheel. I use that for throwing grenades. Other than that, all controls are left as default.
I like the little cheap logitech mice for gaming. They're small and light and I can move them using the tips of my fingers and not my whole hand.
