COD4 multiplayer tips and class loadouts

I've been mostly playing in hardcore mode, team deathmatch, larger games. Yes it is spamming chaos but I've been getting better and the XP gained is huge which is needed for me at this point. I'm level 30.

I was hoping to get some more in-depth tips and stats on the weapons. I know there was this table of all the BF2 weapons giving damage, range, recoil, etc stats. I know COD4 is pretty new but I haven't found much in-depth guides on weapons, perks, etc.

I don't really use sniper rifles since there is too much sway, not a whole lot of damage, and the maps I play normally are small enough to where an assault rifle with red dot sight is just as good. And shotguns, damn I almost never see anyone use those. I might see one dropped every hour or two of playing which makes me think they are worthless. One thing I use to tell if it is useful is to watch what others use, and shotguns aren't one of them.

I have the red dot sight for most of the rifles, the MP5, and the LMGs, silencer for a few, grip for the SAW, etc.

So a few questions and thoughts:

1) Is the weapon camo useful? I play both desert and forest maps, and I'm not sure how much it would even help anyway, but most higher ranked players seem to have their weapons with camo. I think I've only unlocked one of the digital camos and I'm not even sure what that does.

2) What weapon loadouts do you use for different situations? I'm trying to find what perks are most useful. From what I've found (mostly in hardcore): increased health does almost nothing, increased bullet power isn't much use, last stand rarely works, martyrdom always seems to get me but not other people very often. I use sonic boom when I have the GL attachment. Deep impact is very useful for LMGs, and for assault rifles sometimes. I don't see many players using silencers, so I'm not sure how useful the UAV jammer + silencers really are.

3) Is there any difference in pistols? The stats aren't given for them. One guide says the USP is essentially the M9 with a lower capacity, but seems it should be like the 1911 more. I sort of use them all, but can't tell a whole lot of difference, and whether the .45 round makes a difference to offset the lower capacity.

4) What perk 1 do you use? C4 seems useless for TDM games. 3x stun or flash grenades can be decent for assaulting. RPG-7 is good for choppers but I can't EVER hit them so I've stopped using it. Claymores are OK, and mostly I've started equipping them since there is nothing better really. Bomb squad seems pretty useless.

5) Is there even a point to using a SMG, especially anything other than the MP5?

My loadouts are below. I use 1x frag, 1x stun (seems more common than flashbangs) for all of them, and I don't use any camo skins.
slot 1
G3 with grenade launcher
1911
Sonic boom
Martyrdom

slot 2
M16A4 with red dot sight
USP
Claymore x2
Juggernaut (increased health)
Martyrdom

slot 3
MP5 with silencer
1911 with silencer
UAV jammer
Martyrdom

slot 4
M60E4 with red dot or SAW with grip
M9
Stopping power
Deep impact

slot 5
M4 with silencer
1911 with silencer
Claymore x2
UAV jammer
Martyrdom

I'm not sure if I need slots 3 and 5. I like the stealthiness offered by the UAV jammer and the silenced weapons, but I'm not sure if the MP5 offers anything over the M4. I'm not sure on perks: sleight of hand, double tap, steady aim, extreme conditioning, last stand.

So I know this is a pretty long post but I just want to hear what other people use (tactics, weapons, perks, etc) and what they find effective or useless. Thanks.

I rock:
M16 w/ ACOG
USP w/ Suppressor
3x Stun grenades
Double Tap
Steady Aim

Most of my kills are made without sights, on hardcore servers. Steady aim helps me put my shots in the center of the screen where I need them. I just recently switched from Stopping Power to double tap, and I've found that double tap is far more effective with the M16.

As soon as I get my red camo, I plan on switching to the G3. At this point, I've never used any gun other than the M16.

I think I'm at level 53 right now and I'm trying to level up all of the weapons so I can get the experience but a few of my favorites are:

For a normal map
M16
Desert Eagle
3X grenades
Stopping power
Deep impact

For smaller maps like vacancy
P90
desert eagle
3X grenades
slight of hand
martyrdom or steady aim

I have several loadouts, but I mostly use just a few of them:

Assault
G36C w/ red dot
3x frag
Stopping Power
Deep Impact
Desert Eagle

It's good for short-medium range. Can do long in a pinch.

CQC
P90 w/ red dot
Bandolier
Desert Eagle
Double tap
Steady aim

Excellent for short-medium range - fires fast, big magazine, but sucks at long range.

Heavy
Semi-auto shotgun
3x Frag
Sleight of Hand
Last Stand
Desert Eagle

Amazing at super-close range, horrendous beyond it. I wield the DE when I'm not indoors.

General, Non-HC/FF, HQ/S&D/Domination
P90 w/ Silencer
3x frag
Stopping Power
Martyrdom
Deagle

P90 packs quite a punch even at range with Stopping Power. Probably a bit overpowered even in terms of accuracy at long range. Can also run faster/sprint further with SMG vs Assault/LMG.

Ranged/Spread, HC/FF or non-HC, any game type and map
M4/G36C/P90 w/ Red Dot or Silencer
Bandolier
Stopping Power or Double Tap
Steady Aim or Last Stand
Deagle

Use this when I want a bit more range/damage in maps/game types where people tend to camp or HC/FF servers. After using P90, kinda feel like Bandolier is necessary for assault rifles to keep up. Have 2-3 variations of this at any given time and constantly tweak them between rounds.

Suppressing Fire/Heavy Assault, HC/FF or non-HC, any game type and map
M60 with Grip
Grip
Stopping Power
Deep Impact
Deagle

Haven't used this as much lately but its very fun and effective. Shoots through walls and first few shots are deadly accurate.

Spam, Non-HC/FF, Spam maps
Varies
3x Frag
Sonic Boom
Martyrdom
Deagle

As the name implies, used for Shipment or the boat map. Sometimes switch to it for certain maps mid-spawn like Countdown or Bog.

Pseudo-Sniper, HC/FF or non-HC, any game type and map
M14 or G3 w/ Red Dot
Bandolier
Double Tap
Steady Aim
Deagle

Use mostly for a fun change of pace. Arguably better than an actual sniper rifle and has a nice RoF with Double Tap. Even very effective in CQC when you fire from the hip.

Lemme try and give some of my thoughts on these:

They don't do anything, its really just a by-product of how long and efficiently you've used a particular weapon or class of weapon.

2) What weapon loadouts do you use for different situations? I'm trying to find what perks are most useful. From what I've found (mostly in hardcore): increased health does almost nothing, increased bullet power isn't much use, last stand rarely works, martyrdom always seems to get me but not other people very often. Perks can make a huge difference depending on game type/server-size/weapon/map etc. For instance, splash damage and perks like Martyrdom are bad on FF/HC servers. On smaller servers or non-respawn servers, stuff like UAV jammer aren't as useful since UAV won't be up as much. Silencers aren't as good on HC servers because there's no HUD normally, but still do a good job of masking where you're firing from. I like Stopping Power a lot and even moreso on HC servers. Rapid Fire is pretty good too for weapons with a lower RoF, but emptying your clip faster isn't always a good thing with weapons with smaller clips.

Not really sure, there's probably some differences in their damage, RoF, clip, and accuracy/recoil, but nothing worth losing sleep over. Typically I go with Any w/ Silencer or Deagle and swap to a 2nd Primary at the first chance I get.

3x Frag or Bandolier for me on non-HC. 3x Stun/Claymore/Bandolier for HC/FF servers. C4 can be good, they're kinda like short-range grenades without a bounce/cook time. Glad RPG aren't more effective or they'd be as bad as noob tubes.

5) Is there even a point to using a SMG, especially anything other than the MP5?
All the SMG are pretty similar, but there's the P90 of course later on. :) SMG are probably the main reason a lot of people don't use shotguns in this game. Incredibly effective at close range, decent at mid-range and not totally useless at long-range.

There's some things I'd like to see rebalanced, like some of the Perk slots and weapons. Would also like to see more indoor maps that vary on 3D plane along with some more open maps with dense foliage etc.

Hardcore Mode

(1) M4 with silencer
Bandolier
UAV jammer
Deep impact

(2) G3 with red dot
bandolier
UAV jammer
Deep Impact

Normal Mode
(3) M4 with red dot
Bandolier
Stopping Power
Deep impact

For CQB, both modes,
(4) AK with red dot
Bandolier
Double tap
Deep impact.

I also have a class that i rarely use, except when I need a bit more reach on some maps.
(5)M14 with red dot (horrible recoil!)
bandolier
Stopping power
Deep impact.

All with pimped out Gold Deagle + 1xflash/1xfrag.

I've experimented with all sorts of combos and the above 5 work the best for my style of gameplay, so I've settled on those. I am not averse to picking up a SAW or a Ak74 that's lying around as a secondary weapon if the opportunity presents itself.

M16 w/ Red Dot
USP
3xFrag
Stopping Power
Last Stand

I also sub the P90 w/ Red Dot on close-quarters maps.

I'm almost done leveling through prestige mode once. Not sure if I'll do it again.

My enjoyment of the game has gone up significantly since I got to level 55, since I no longer go XP hunting. That means that I now no longer have any use for the following items, which I quite frankly wish they would signiciantly tone down, or just take out of the game

- P90
- Grenade Launcher
- Martyrdom

My general loadout is now

Straight Sniper

- Dragunov
- Desert Eagle
- Claymores
- UAV Jammer
- Iron Lungs

Which I love but is clearly only good for sniper friendly maps. Pipeline being a favorite

Mixed Sniper

- Dragunov
- M16
- Killing machine (or whatever the hell its called where you get 2 primary weapons)
- UAV Jammer
- Stopping power (I think)

Which allows you to wield the M16 most of the time but flip into snuper mode when the opportunity presents itself.

The assault rifles with red dot sight also need toning down at range. On most maps you're genuinly better off (even at extreme range) with one of those than a sniper rifle, which is not how it should be. Getting a sniper kill is hugely satisfying but with an assault rifle you can just put the dot roughly where you think they are and spray and you'll eventually get them. I also wish they're remove the sound when you've hit the enemy, since this encourages the spray and pray technique since you know if you're in roughly the right area

I'm only level 31, but I agree x eleventybillion.

I really, really really hate martyrdom, and the number of grenades in most games.

Thank you all for the input. I will go over it more closely and tweak my class loadouts later today. I'm jonesin' to play.

I agree about the balance changes. I know it is my fault for playing on servers with 32-40+ players, no FF, and hardcore mode usually, but it gets spamtastic. Why in the hell would they reward someone who knows what they are doing (at level 41) with 3x frag? The P90 is widely used by good players, and even though I completely suck with it when I pick it up, it does need to be toned down. Martyrdom is annoying to me, especially when I don't get many with it, but I can somewhat deal with it.

I was tearing it up last night with the silenced M4 and UAV jammer. Since the games I play on are hardcore but very large, the UAV is almost constantly up.

And you are right about being able to enjoy the game. I know I don't HAVE to level up or do anything, since at level 34, I've already unlocked a good bit of stuff. I still would like to get a bit further and unlock a few more things, then I can play on smaller servers with more tactical combat since I don't need a huge score then.

Between high level people with 3x frags and everything else, grenade launchers (which aren't too too bad), and worst of all the airstrikes and choppers, this game gets far worse than BF2 as far as level of frustration. And I thought BF2 got bad. Haha, I try not to get too pissed, as I do have a lot of fun with it. All I ever want to do is get 5 kills to get an airstrike, which almost always gets you the chopper, which means I'll have 10-15+ kill streak almost for sure once I get 5. I've actually finished #1 on the server to get that challenge, and got within the top 3 on the server several more times.

I HATE the maps District, Bog, and Vacant. Complete crap. Downpour is pretty bad too. Another couple are so-so, and the rest are pretty good.

I typically use

M16 with red dot
The light Machine Gun between the SAW and M60 with red dot
Bandoliers
Deep impact

But I have in closer quarters maps been using the same as above but switched out the M16 for the P90 with red dot.

I am also toying with using an M16 and P90 combo.

Game was sweet for awhile but like anything the spammers take hold of a game and squeeze what fun is left out of it. I cant believe how many nade spammers there are in this game.

M16 with red dot
Deagle
3x stun
Stopping power
Extreme conditioning

I'll use that setup 90% of the time; depending on mode and whether it's (non)hc, I'll swap Stopping for the Jammer and a silencer on the M16.

Just use a Scorpion with a silencer, bandolier, sleight of hand and silence (no point in silencer without being quiet yourself). I use it all the time. It has tons of range for distance since there's no recoil. It is great up close with the fast reload. If you are silence you can walk behind people and knife them all the time.

Even the range of the SMG's (let alone the assault rifles) is silly. I was having a wonderful time on pipeline the other night hidden up in the hills picking them off from miles away with my dragunov, when I suddenly got nailed. When I watched the kill cam I see a little oik take aim from the smashed up building literally at the opposite end of the (large map) and pick me off with... the P90.

I hate that damn thing. I dont necessarily agree that good players use it either. You dont get it til quite a high level (something like level 40) but once you do, its just so much better than the other guns. If I use the P90 on most maps I can pretty much guarantee myself top place for kill numbers and with an insane kill ratio (assuming you have stopping power, which seems to turn its bullets from needles into howitzer shells)

1) All purpose:
M4 Carbine w/ Red Dot sight

2) When a little range is needed:
G3 w/ red dot
Stun nades
Claymores
Stopping Power
Extreme Conditioning

3) lots of players, lots of action
M60E4 w/ grip
Smoke
Sleight of Hand
Bandolier? I may have forgotten something

Ok ive only really just started playing COD4 and am a pretty low level (17 i think) but i seem to always find myself up in the top 3 of the scores with the pros. It seems to be cos of my setup.

1.
RPD w/ Red Dot Sight (i can get headshots from sniper distances)
Any pistol w/ silencer
RPG x2 (only decent think for perk 1 right now) or x3 special grenades (smoke or flash)
Stopping Power
Deep Impact

It can even kill a person at range in 1 or 2 shots. Im slowling trying to get used to the M60E4 but i really need a red dot for it cos the ironsight is horrible. And i dont use an ACOG for the RPD cos it reduces the accuracy and i cant get those headshots anymore :(

Oh and im ALWAYS on HC

I do hate Downpour and Wetwork. Bloc isn't so bad, though. I've found that you can get a lot more kills by sprinting around with an SMG than you can by sniping. If you move erratically enough (sprint, prone, hide, sprint), you shouldn't have much of a problem with snipers, even in the open.
