Obligatory "Impressive, but can it run crysis?" post.

There, we got that out of the way.

It's crazy how many controls and dials there are. I wonder if majority of these critical, or just info the pilots rarely reference.

that's nothing compared to what it was years ago, there use to be a flight engineer position in most large planes.

this a 747 before the glass cockpit:

The only controls/knobs the pilots do not touch are the red ones. But really with these newer systems most things are automated fuel loading, pressurization, A/C, etc. (what the flight engineer used to do) So I would imagine the majority stay on auto with the ability for manual control.

Why can't they make the panels different colors? It would make it easier to locate controls easier than looking at one giant gray panel of knobs and buttons.

Actually with that many controls I'd rather they were all the same colour except a crucial few. Besides pilots are hopefully trained to know where every fucking thing is anyway.

that is how the airlines weed out the people who should not be flying planes in the first place. What will the pilots who need color coding do at night when the cockpit is lit up with red lights?

On a normal flight, you'd use or move or touch maybe 20% of what you see there.
Aircrews spend hour after hour in the sim learning the rest of them and all the diabolical ways the sim instructor can cause things to fail.

What are those - lambskin seat covers?
you bet. anything to help out with the arse-rash you would get from 12 hours of sitting.
You've heard the description of an airline pilot's physique?
"slender shoulders, tapering to a broadly powerful ass"

I profess I know squat about flying a plane, but I can't believe we haven't advanced beyond toggle switches and knobs. Why aren't those replaced with touchscreens or at least keypads?
