It was an interesting show to listen to over the weekend on This American Life. I thought the bit where they got to the extract of coca leaves was pretty funny.

The one outcome - at least when I stopped listening - is that this is the recipe for the original version of Coca Cola but it doesn't taste like modern Coke. This is the recipe back from the 1880's and the taste appears to have changed over time.

As a matter of fact it seems to me they changed the recipe again in the last couple months. Either that I or I just dont like the crap any more. \

Pepsi as well.
 
Yeah, it's weird but at some point I stopped liking Coke (or any carbonated beverage). In college I would drink 2-3 cans per day and now I'm drinking like 2-3 cans per year. I don't remember making an actual decision to stop drinking it... it just gradually happened. And now I don't really like the flavor.

Another think on the same point as the OP, is that Coke's flavor seems to vary around the world. Definitely Coke in Europe tastes different than Coke in the US - I think it was the use of sugar beets in the EU and corn syrup in the US but I never was sure. It's not that one is more sweet than the other - although I think the EU version is slightly sweeter, but the EU version tastes different. In a blind taste test, I am certain that I could always figure out the US coke - they are very different.

Yes, it has less cocaine in it now.

Challenge accepted. I'm going to try to find some EU coke and we can do a taste test in the cafeteria.

Cool! 🙂 I definitely want to hear about the results.

When I was at university in England, I brought back a 6-pack and we had a blind taste test in the dining hall. Not everyone agreed with me but most people did.

It's coincidental but I made a batch of homemade root beer (fermented in bottle) and we had a taste test in the cafeteria here at work today over lunch and it generally got a thumbs up. I replaced a bit of the sugar with extract of stevia leaves (I have a couple of stevia plants in our house and I'm always looking for excuses to use them). I don't drink softdrinks much, but I have fun messing around with rootbeer. A lot of things like cookies and cakes, stevia just tastes weird, but it works well in rootbeer.
