Didn't someone just spill a ton (the amount, not figure of speech) from a truck last week? How are they messing up so badly? :p

They are a little off by there count. I'm only calculating 363 million at 20k per kilo.

edit:

funny part is 1000 tons made it through without a problem.

They go by the final street value and generally mark it up to as much as they possibly can. The better they seem to be doing, the more federal funding they get. The war on drugs is really no more than a job gravy train for the DEA & Coast Guard.

@ $50 a gram it comes out to 900 million. I want to know their formula.

I guess this is the bait the drug cartels worked out with the feds. The Feds let in x amount of drugs in exchange for the occassional big time bust for publicity.

"Street value" isn't really a good indicator because if this stuff is pure, that doubles its value. Most cocaine is cut with all kinds of crap by the time it is selling for $50/gram on the street.

I'm sure they would have taken that into account.

I'm sure they take that into account when giving their estimates. Most times they're way, way over the actual value.

That was more directed at people here trying to estimate its value. I doubt the government is very truthful in their estimate either.. let's just say it was a lot of cocaine.

I wish they would list the value of the coke in terms of how much it costs to produce instead of street value.

$600,000,000 / 18,143,694.8 grams = Obviously $33.06 per gram.

The armed Coast Guard cutter Sherman stopped the Panamanian cargo ship Gatun about 20 miles off a Panamanian island on March 17.

Uh, what's a US Coast Guard cutter doing patroling the waters of Panama?

The street value of drugs is often different depending on the area. It depends on what it would cost there.
