That's too bad. Probably because its on the Weather Channel and people don't watch the channel for more than a quick glance at the weather.

If you do have the chance, check out the show. Any episode at random is fine, you don't need to watch them in order.

In the pretty bad movie The Guardian they point out that when the weather gets so bad the navy and air force retreat to their bases, that's when the Coast Guard goes out from theirs.

I want me one of those Sikorsky Jayhawk helicopters for Christmas!
 
I have a friend who's a bush pilot up there. Those guys are CRAZY. If I was single & had any guts whatsoever, I'd love to do that job, but it's reserved for guys (& gals) with more hair on their chest than I have 😀
 
The show sort of reminds me of Deadliest Catch the first couple of seasons before everything was staged. The lowering and raising of the baskets and the swimmers actually are filmed as they happened and are real rescues.

Even when I was young and dumb I don't think I would have had the balls to be a rescue swimmer. In fact, few people do.

I like how one woman described looking up and seeing a 12 year olds smiling face who was thoroughly knowledgeable and put her completely at ease. In fact a couple of the rescue swimmers don't look more than 15, tops.

I wonder how hard it was to pilot the copters before the recently added autopilots that can do a complete hover?
 
They have it on Hulu, along with a Florida and Cape Disappointment. Watching the first episode of Florida now. Little different then the other two with more potential for drug smuggling.

My dad was a Coastie stationed up at Kodiak back in the day. It is a bummer that the USCG does have an undeserved reputation as the b-team.
