Coal company says Senate tax plan 'wipes us out'

Murray Energy supported Trump's attempt to prop up coal, but its CEO says the Senate tax plan would kill the company. And it would likely take down other coal companies, too.

You have to like the irony: Trump's bid to preserve the coal industry is being undermined by his own party. I mean, I'd rather kill the tax plan (coal is thankfully dying no matter what Trump does), but there'd be a silver lining if it hastened the death of coal and a shift toward renewable energy. Maybe someone can tell Trump that the plan would kill coal so he'll refuse to sign it!

Murray is a lunatic though. Although he is responsible for one of the best footnotes I've seen in a legal ruling from one of his defamation suits (he sues anyone who says anything negative about him or his companies).

“For those who might not be familiar, Dr. Evil, whose real name is Douglas Evil Powers, gained notoriety as the villain of the Austin Powers film franchise,” explains the Judge of the comparison Oliver made to Murray. “He is a parody of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, a nemesis of James Bond,” it is additionally noted. “Along with his cat, Mr. Bigglesworth, a colorful supporting entourage, and a plethora of secret lairs, Dr. Evil made several attempts at taking over the world, before ultimately finding redemption by the end of the final film.”

True, but you'd have to be pretty foolhardy to expect a coal business to thrive in 2017!

Good luck! 😀
I'm ok. Mr. Nutterbutter has my back if Bob decides to sue.

If anyone hasn't seen Oliver's bit on Bob Murray. Go find it. Freaking awesome.

It would be totally amazing if Republican incompetence in drafting the AMT provision actually smothered the coal industry.

If there's too much competition from natural gas and renewables for most of these coal companies to survive, then so be it. There aren't that many jobs there anyway. There are more jobs in the competing industries.

Murray is a whiny little bitch.

Plus trying to draft legislation in the middle of the night that, seemingly, nobody proofread or ran past a tax lawyer or 50.

Tax prep people are already gearing up to find all the holes in this thing and it's looking like swiss cheese.

I'm holding out for the eventual discovery that I can effectively claim myself as 6 individual dependents.

this is some irony i can get behind.

The fragrance of Republican backfire is indeed quite the pleasant sensation to experience. And for the fact that they do it on a regular basis in order to cram their legislation through passage before their own constituents can see what's going on makes for a rather comical if not ruinous sight to behold.

It would truly be a shame to see those clean, high paying, safe and non-cancer causing jobs go away.

Last figure I read, there were ~78,000 jobs in coal and Trump's "concerned" about those jobs, yet nary a word about some employers that are almost assured of closing their doors in 2018 which employ many more than the entire coal industry.

For instance, I doubt anyone believes Sears will be open this time next year....Sears employs ~140,000 people. Same with JCPenney, which employs ~106,000. Or Toys R Us, which employs ~70,000.

Each store employs as many persons or many more than the entire coal industry, but anyone speaking up about propping them up?

Cry me a river, coal.

More people work at Arby's than in coal mines in America.

The fast roast beef sandwich industry policy is rightly not a pivotal national priority.

But those are Trump voters and the others are not.😛

Pretty sure renewable energy alternatives are wiping out coal, this the irony of a Con tax plan hastening their demise won't go unnoticed.
