In my sons hockey league they stop putting the score on the board after you're ahead by 5.

So the score board would show 5 - 0 even if you scored 3 more goals. However if the other team does score one, then you get to display one too. i.e. 6 - 1.

This way it only looks like you lost / won by 5. Official scores (8 - 1 in the example) are sent to the office and used in calculating ranks etc.

Damn, a lot of people in this thread have some pussy fvcking sports leagues.

They should suspend the coach that loses by 50+ points instead of the one that wins. It'll make him work harder to not suck so bad.

So to make the other team feel better, the offense gets down to the 5 yard line, takes a knee and gives a turnover on downs. Wash, rinse, repeat. That should work.

As to the baseball comment, the 10 run rule is not to keep from hurting the other team's feelings, it's to keep the games from going on forever if one team can't succesfully get the other team out in a timely manner.

then you will have poeple bitching that the defence is to hard. that hey should let them run up the field and get some yards.

pfft. if you lose by that much PRACTICE HARDER. heh when i was in JR high i was on the soccer team. we sucked! we did not win a game and only scored ONE goal all year! most games we lost were by 5-8 heh. did it destroy my life? no it taught me that if i want to be good in a sport i need to practice and work hard.

I think rules like this need to stop in pee-wee leagues. Once you're in HS you need to learn to suck it up. Being a man about getting your butt whipped is just as important a skill as being a good winner. If they don't wan't teams getting blown out then they need to have more than 1 division. If a school gets beat by 90 pts so be it. I would hope the coaches would have enough sense not to run up the score in games like this, but let's face it... in HS a running back can dominate a game enough to make running just as bad as passing.

I think poor sportsmanship is bad, but so is teaching kids not to try their best.

QFT!!!... Sense of Entitlement FTL. But it isn't fair, they practiced harder and are more athletic than us, and then they beat us by alot and make us feel bad. WAHHHH EMO.

This is the epitome of "fair."

Virtually cutting the legs off the better players so the horrible players can "compete."

This is why "fair trade" is oppressive as well.

You can be free, or fair. Never both.

that team that got beat by 90 pts, how do we know that it wasn't the 2nd or 3rd string that helped do it. you shouldn't stop playing as hard when the team isn't as good, that's lack of disipline and disrespect. you should respect the other teams skill and beat the crud out of them.

i know it sounds pretty harsh, but put it this way, how would you feel if you knew a team didn't work as hard jsut so you can score a point and then lose anyways.

yet another way to prepare these kids for life in the 'real' world...

losing (sometimes losing big) is a part of life...deal with it...you can't coddle someone forever....

You don't think winning by 50 does the same thing? There comes a point where there is nothing more to be proven and 90-0 crosses way beyond that line. That shows no class.

You still haven't explained how it shows no class.

Team A and Team B are vying for a playoff spot with two games to go and Team B is ahead by one game. The game between Teams A and B starts out even enough, but, eventually, it is clear that Team A is on its game today. Just before the half, Team A is leading by 24 and Team B?s QB gets knocked out of the game.

Things seem hopeless, but at halftime, the coach of Team B comes up with a plan. If he can?t beat Team A this week (resulting in the two teams being tied), maybe he can help beat them next week by getting their coach suspended.

He instructs his players to ?fumble? the ball into their own end zone on every play, allowing Team A to recover the ball for a touchdown. Team A ends up winning by more than 50 - mission accomplished.

Stupid rule.

Agreed, but to punish someone for winning by the rules is ridiculous.

What if you are up by 49 points and your 3rd string defense accidently scores or you get a safety?

This is a moronic rule. The rule should be that if you ever get beat by 50+ points in a single game you automatically forfeit the rest of your season.
The same type of BS happened with that young black girl who played basketball and scored 100+ points herself. Everyone bitched about it.
As an athlete you play to win, and you continue to play your game until the last second runs off the clock. No respectable athlete should EVER let up.

How is there "class" in stopping your team from what they are supposed to be doing (scoring points)? How is it sportsmanlike to demonstrate to your team that you're too good so you should just stop playing your routine game?

When my baseball team gets up by 9 or so runs we start playing island baseball. On offense we stop stealing and just hit the ball to get from base to base, hold up runners in questionable scoring positions, etc. In close games we get runs by making runs, in shutouts we get runs from their crappy pitching.
