easy to say. hard ot do

They really can't because then people cry foul if they "feel" they are better qualified for the job. Degrees give employers an excuse to go "Hey look they have a degree" and thats why things work the way they do.

Its 100% truly that simple. Once the current under 30 crowed are running the show I think we'll abandon the "hiding behind degrees instead of real leadership" style of 'leadership' Since we will all have them and know it doesn't make a difference.

University of Phoenix is a respected college. Keep on listening to all the Harvard graduates here that tell you its not.

No, not really. I tried Phoenix and its primarily a business. The education you receive there is overpriced and lacking substance. You simply pay for your degree.

I did not go to Harvard but I can assure you Phoenix is a sub-standard, want-to-be college. Anyone who believes otherwise probably could not make it at regular school. I have see several people who had to quit real schools and attend Phoenix because they could not maintain a "C" average.

I'm with the OP on this one. It really is a punch in the balls when people are classified as "educated" and all they have done is pay their way through a "respected" school.

You put your money in the wrong stock so to speak :)

The great game of life, you played a wrong hand :)

The core asset to any college is their prestige. Harvard goes for excellence, Penn State went for sports prestige, University of Phoenix over-charges and runs TV ads. Game set and match lol.

Oh, I know. That's what pisses me off. People put more value into the paper than I think it's worth. If you get a lot of applicants, it may be a convenient chopping point that'll still allow good prospects through, but you're certainly losing some good ones in the process. If you're only getting a few applicants, you may be dismissing the most qualified without a look.

Once you are hired at most places, your success will depend more on the quality of your clothes and hair than the quality of your work. The majority of the time anyway.

It really isn't. It is incredibly overpriced and has dubious quality. I honestly don't know why someone would pick UoP, as there are superior and cheaper options available.

Out of curiosity... are there any well respected online schools?

I only ask this, because I want to go back and finish off my bachelor's (I stupidly dropped out of school because I was unwilling to take out a loan), but the problem is, my work schedule doesn't really allow me to take classes in a conventional way.

Many regular schools have online programs, at least for grad school (not sure about undergrad, as I haven't looked). WGU gets relatively good press as well.

They are all paper :)

Some fields make use of them but you learn faster on the job. This is one thing the medical field has right - first book learning and then residency/fellowship etc. Its worked for a long time.

Book learning is just book learning and is absolutely no substitution for experience no matter how much grads cry about how much they were overcharged or how how much their tenured professors abused their status :p

I 100% wish society did not place so much emphasis on "higher learning."

I understand what he's TRYING to say. I'm also trying to point out that before you go saying it's impossible, don't go saying it's impossible.

Except for you posted about someone without a degree being successful, and he was talking about being admitted to a graduate level program without an undergraduate degree/GMAT.

Apples and oranges.

There are. I'm doing a combination of the two. I'm using the GI Bill to go to University of Louisville taking both online and in class courses. Right now I do one online, and my other two classes are on my lunch breaks (one m,w,f, the other t and th).

Most schools offer either complete online degrees or you can pick and choose what you take online and in class.

That is where shaq got his MBA. Hell I know people with MBA s from real schools who are borderline morons so I have no idea what a phoenix one is worth when at least in private sector most places don't give you a promotion just for getting a new piece of paper. Guess that's the government for you

Ha, I got a promotion and a nice raise for getting my CISSP (talk about a worthless piece of paper.) Silly, but if they want to play that game I'm happy to oblige.

Not entirely true. I remember getting a decent sized raise a few years ago when I was in the private sector just for getting my CCNA.
