Co-worker is a douche

To some extent he is right. But going from one extreme (sitting all day) to other extreme (standing all day) is not exactly smart.

It's all about moderation. 😉

As for "co worker is a douche" comment. If you think THIS is an example of douche.....boy, you have no idea. People I've met/delt with over the years in a corporate world would make this seem like a grain of salt in a universe.

All around douche...

Douchebaggery not found.

I myself get horrible lower back pain if I sit all day. Would wanting a standing desk make me a douchebag because sitting all day is horrible for you?

Yes, that is exactly what it would make you.

At my last company, we all had desks that could be elevated so that we could stand at them. They were great when you had others at your desk reviewing/collaborating on stuff.

This is just this week's example. Last week it was a ball chair. Next week he'll probably be barefoot because shoes are bad. Who knows. It just seems like he focuses more on this stuff than work.

standing at the desk makes me less effective... all I think about every minute is why I have to fricken waste energy standing. It's also less comfortable since we're looking down too. Been there, done that.

the odd thing is it makes you stay awake since you have to stand.

that is why assembly lines dont have chairs. i once worked at a company HP contracted to make the hp pavilions and there were no stools or chairs. you had to stand all day and like plug hard drives / ram in. yes it was tiring on your feet, but you'd never fall asleep on the job.

This is why security guards don't sit down in retail clothing stores and why George Costanza is responsible for theft.

I have one of those co-workers that likes to do trendy things, then brags about how cutting-edge he is (which is in actuality a thinly veiled attempt to gain acceptance).

This week's thing to do is "the standing desk". Sitting at at desk is very unhealthy, so he wants a desk with no chair so you have to stand all day, because he has visions of being hip and cool like these guys:

Well, his request for a new desk was denied, so now he has his computer propped up on cardboard boxes to make a ghetto standing desk. I'm waiting for his workstation to topple over soon 😀 All I can do is shake my head every time I see him in his office. He looks so confident and determined standing in front of this cardboard boxes. I'll have to see if I can get some pics later.

I wish they had a standup area where I work.

Sitting at your desk sucks. It'd be much healthier to stand at a desk all day.

I've heard some people praise the standing desk. I can see it working for some people but it should never be forced on anyone. I find I get more fatigued more from standing for a long amount of time, than from walking.

Sounds like his previous behavior makes him a douche maybe.

A few weeks ago, I started standing while working. To be honest, I did it because it allows me to have a few more snacks during the day as it does burn extra calories.

I was just lucky that I didn't require a new desk.

It also encourages me to wander around when thinking about complex problems instead of just staring at the problem on the screen.

A standing desk sounds great so long as you're one of those people who is constantly in and out of the office. If you're there for hours at a time it would get annoying.
