for consulting, it could help a little bit, but honestly what matters most is how smart you are and how well you can do on the case interview all consulting firms give
So people are going to respect a consultant more if he has no experience, rather than experience in a different field?
You only get hired if you can pass the case interview. the interview is designed to test your analytical skills in a business setting. The case they give is similar to the work they do on an everyday basis. If you can ace that you'll do fine as a consultant. I did not say that experience doesn't matter, it does. But what matters more is how smart you are and how do you in the interview.
