Last night a convoy of trucks was to traverse the terrain of Taliban-held Afghanistan with priceless cargo: a satellite up-link that promises to deliver the first clear images from Kandahar, the Afghan city that has seen heavy action since the United States bombing raids began on October 7th. The satellite dish is the property of CNN, but it is to be shared with Al-Jazeera. The Arab-language news network that has the only Taliban-sanctioned TV presence in the area.
In return, CNN will get exclusive interviews with an English-speaking Al-Jazeera correspondent based in Kandahar - potential journalistic gold in a war that has been woefully short on images and information from the ground. So they don't have the interview locked down yet, but in the New York Times, it explains how they think they're going to get it.
What does CNN expect him to tell us? The truth of what he's going to do? "Oh, yes. We expect more anthrax spores to be released in Jersey City on November 1st." CNN has not yet secured their interview with Osama bin Laden, but this is really raising questions. I took a call on Tuesday from a woman who asked if CNN was committing treason. This interview really has people upset, and it hasn't even happened yet!
The thing is, the media is pretty misguided on these sorts of things. Just look at the questions they ask in these Department of Defense press conferences. Their inability to understand why you do things covertly, and keep quiet things we don't need to know, was dealt with brilliantly by Donald Rumsfeld on Monday.
He explained to the press in very simple terms what is going on. He did a great job, and we are incredibly lucky to have him in the Pentagon. The press may think it is the guardian of our freedom, but set against Rumsfeld, we see who is really excelling at the role of protector.
