wow.. they are making it sound like the end of the world.

all it would take would be a really nasty one to wipe out at least half of the world's computers.

If a virus is really nasty, its capability spread quickly is diminished. A PC with a formated hard drive can't function as a zombie machine spreading the virus.

Yes, but just wait until one of these virus writers gets smart and puts in a Logic Bomb. The trick is to give it enough time to spread, and before the majority has a chance to find it and get rid of it, you set a timer to destroy data.

The only thing keeping them from doing this now is greed. Because with undetected zombie networks, they can make money off spam farms.

What is sad is that they have had a week to patch their systems, and all of these big media companies that heavily rely on their IT have been let down. What I'm reading is that it only took 90 minutes for them to bring the systems back up. Wasn't really newsworthy until it happened to the news companies. 😛

well in many corporate cultures you can't make a change without change control.

This can sometimes take two weeks for approval, by policy. (thank you Mr. Sarbane and Mr. Oxley)

Patching 1000s of servers is no easy task and will disrupt service.

Yep, change control blows ass in situations like this. We're currently pushing the patch, but have been put of, waiting for our next service window. Fortunately, I'm a good salesman and of course national headlines always make management more "pliable" when it comes to such things.

Okay answer me this...

Does change control also include Virus Signatures?

Some of these worms hit full power in like two days.
