Correct.
Not only that, it's not even one of the biggest planes. It's much smaller than their 747 from the 1960's. It was never meant to be a big plane, it's just a practical, efficient one.

I've heard some news sources simply refer to carbon fiber reinforced plastic as "plastic."Originally posted by: bsobel

Umm ummm ummm the headline got cut off "will be the world's first large commercial airplane made mostly of carbon-fiber composites" yea, that's it![]()

Yeah, I have seen this a few times. "Boeing's plastic plane" and such. Of course, the first image you think of is a waterbottle or something like that.

When Ford made the Excursion that was 11" longer than the Chevy Suburban, GM's response: "We got the size right." The Excursion got canned, while the Suburban is going on something like 50 years in production.
When Airbus made the A380 larger than the 747. Boeing's response, "They don't want larger planes, just more efficient and cheaper to operate ones." Now they're struggling to sell compared to the 787.
There is a point when "bigger isn't better". In the case of transportation, I think we got the top end sizes perfect. There's no need to go larger with the exception of special purpose carriers (ie: Superguppy and Antonov 220). They key now is to lower cost and increase reliability. The main reason jet airliners replaced prop is because a prop engine needed to be rebuilt about every 3000 hours, a jet 20,000. Aircraft don't make money when they're in the hanger for maintenance. Having flown in a few different aircraft, I think that the 737-777 size aircraft are about the right size. Larger and boarding/deplaning times seem to take alot longer, and the cabin feels more like a "herd", smaller, and things just feel cramped.

I think the plane was unmanned, testing a new autopilot or somesuch (no audio here, so forgive me if they say that in the vid).

The video disagrees. Narrator clearly says that the video is of the first fully automated planeOriginally posted by: K1052
No, that is an airshow demo of an Airbus A320 loaded with passengers and all. Several people died in that crash.
The pilot was supposed to make a low pass (not that low) over the runway. The offical version is that the entire thing was pilot error but it there is fairly convincing evidence that Airbus, Air France, and the French government covered up the real reasons for the crash (problems with the plane).
