This isn't really P&N because it's more a mindless rant. People on the first page get thumbs up as do some others. Look at the guy on page 3. He says:

I didn't expect to be laid off...The timing was awful; I had purchased a more expensive phone plan a few days prior, a new car one year ago and my first home a few months earlier...With the salary at my last job, I couldn't save much after paying for bills and food.

No wonder you stupid douche rag you couldn't save much after bills and food at your last job, you did silly sh*t like buying a new car and upgrading a cell plan.

It just grinds my gears to hear about professionals making good salaries complaining that they are so hard up financially, as if they're trying to support a family of five on McDonald's wages.

He says his savings will take him to the end of summer but he definitely stretched himself too thin. I don't understand how you can do this to yourself.

What's even more funny is he didn't have taxes taken out so when he gets a job this year he's going to have a WTF moment come tax time. Guy sounds like an idiot - when they get more money they spend it.

And not a damn thing is preventing ANY of these people from working at walmart or a general laborer or two jobs.

LOL, the same moron quoted by OP:

With the salary at my last job, I couldn't save much after paying for bills and food.

New car? Check
More expensive phone plan? Check
New house? Check

Couldn't save more? Epic fail.

Well $75k sure doesn't go as far as you'd like, so it can be tough if your spouse doesn't work.

I hear it day in and day out from co-workers. Alot of them drive older vehicles and still seem to be living almost paycheck to paycheck.

Yeah, I've learned from people like this how important it is to live within your means. It has convinced me to ditch the nice apartment I'm currently renting once my lease is up and rent a room in someone's house for a year so I can build up my savings.

I'm single and make a decet salary ($57,000/yr) but my $1,550/mo apartment rent is leaving me with very little money to save at the end of the month. When I add in utilities/internet/cable I'm spending about $1,735/mo just on basic apartment expenses. 🙁 And I don't want to find myself in a bad position if I should happen to lose my job.

I have seen a few jobs available locally, but one issue for somebody who makes a good salary is that unemployment will only give them money i they are unemployed. It really makes no sense for them to make $9/hour working a menial job if that's what unemployment gives them anyway, unfortunately.

I really glad my tax dollars are going to support stupid idiots.

NOT

While that can be said about lots of things that the government spends on, unemployment is typically paid for by the companies in the form of insurance payments, are they not?

Yeah, a lot of these stories kind of have that note. "So far we've been able to pay for daughter's college bills with cash, but we might need to resort to student loans in the fall."

If the dumbfuck government lowered taxes, there'd be more incentive for people to spend, which would have helped ease this crumple in the stock market immensely.

Instead we have a bunch of short sighted dumbfucks who voted in some more short sighted dumbfucks.

I thought we lowered taxes so everyone gets $13 more a month?

I didn't even lose a job (graduated and couldn't find anything for 2 months) and I was being turned down from "general labor" type jobs because I was overqualified.

Overqualified? How do people use this as a logical excuse. If I was a walmart manager and could get a nasa scientist for $7 an hour, fuck yeah.

The last 8 years wasn't enough for you?

Because they're worried that you'll leave when the economy turns around. It's funny when high turnover rate jobs say that. They don't spend any extra money on recruiting/hiring, and they don't really try to accommadate people to increase retention.

If they get their ideal candidate and they think the person will stick around in that position for a good portion of the future, they're definitely makingthe right choice by not hiring someone overqualified. Now if they lack a pool of good, qualified candidates, they're being silly by not hiring someone overqualified. They might even be able to save money later if a job that's more suitable for that person becomes available. I just doubt the talent pool for general jobs are lacking right now. I think people are still hiring cashiers though, and it would make sense if you've been to some stores...

If you had to spend time dealing with shitty candidates (this is walmart remember?), you would probably want to find someone you could settle in for a while. Someone overqualified will most likely leave when a good job becomes available. It's really only a good idea when you seriously lack good candidates.

It comes up on occassion where I work. Too many people who get a masters degree right after a bachelors with no job experience. They don't tend to get hired.

The irony in your post is that you fail to use your logic; that is assuming you have some logic.

Let's use me as an example. I am unemployed after working approx. ten years as an analytical chemist and doing project manager type of things. I am still looking for a job in my field, and when my severance money & savings gets entirely too low I may have to get a job at Wal-Mart, Target, or whatever.

However, the reality is that sure as shit is not a career choice for me or any other professional person and the Wal-Mart guys know this. They know that we would jump ship as soon as a "real" job is available for us. Hiring an employee is an expensive process and no company is going to want to bleed money on some new employee that is going to leave as soon as they find greener pastures. That would be totally irresponsible of the hiring manager.

To use your example, if you were to hire that NASA scientist for $7/hour do you really freaking think they are going to stick around for long once they find a relevant job? Then upper management would be on your ass for incompetent hiring practices and unnecessarily high turnover.

Try using some logic yourself before you accuse others of not having any.

Babbles,

Logic also says that if you apply for these positions you don't say anything about that and how you are anxious to get to work for Walmart and stress your strong work ethic and ability to show up on time and not call in sick every week.

The problem is you're going to have to explain your work history. I think the best shot at getting a job like that is to find one that is part-time and mention a willingness to work more hours.

You 2 are the reason why a Republican would have trouble getting elected to assistant dogcatcher in rural Utah right now.

Overqualified people get bored and are generally unhappy in their job. A good employer wants their employees to be happy. Overqualified people don't always get along with management because they think (and maybe actually do) know better. Overqualified people tend to leave sooner. Overqualified people may not fit in with the coworkers/team.

I'd hire overqualified people, depending on the person and the job, but it does make sense to watch for it based on these risks.
