Think it was done accidentally or accidentally-on-purpose?

I've never liked CNN, and don't really like any of the US news channels actually. Lucky we have the CBC and BBC here :)

Bet ya £20 that it was a subliminal mistake on the part of the translater - he heard what he personaly wanted to hear, rather than the speech. Oops...many of those translators have some relation to that region, so he may have in fact been an exiled Iranian projecting his opinion. Be interesting to find out his/her background.

It was a rather inopportune goof, but these things happen...I guess that CNN will be kicked out for a month or two, plead for forgiveness, and get re-admitted after playing contrite.

Or we will be at war with Iran by then, in which case it just saves the evacuation of CNN's staff!

There goes that liberal media again :) /sarc off

Seriously a mistake like that is in favor of those pushing for a conflict.

Can any Farsi speakers write phonetically how to say "Technology" and "Weapons" so we can get an idea if it is a slip? I know Arabic and Farsi are similar and some words, but techology is a FAAAR cry from weapons in arabic and I'm thinking the same for Farsi.

cnn and foxnews wetc are trying to push for public support for a war with Iran, that is clear. After the war they will push the idea of how horrible the war is too. Play both sides to keep their ratings maximised.

Arabic is a Semitic language. I suppose its most famous relation is Hebrew. Farsi is an Indo-European language, and therefore related to languages such as English and Hindi. I'm sure Farsi has some Arabic loan-words, but they are, at their foundations, very different languages.

Seems like a reasonable translation service would still record (and check) the translation before delivering it as a finished product. Even a cursory proofing would have revealed the error since Ahmadinejad's statement contains a 2nd reference to "weapons".
