I will attest that the 75GXP is one of the best drives available as long as it doesn't die on you. 😉
 
It's good to know that if it WERE working, it'd be a solid drive.

=) Just waiting for the RMA.....

I can't BELIEVE I'm actually thinking about plopping down another $100 on the 60GXP. That'd be 60 gigs of storage I'm waiting to fail AGAIN, and 40 gigs of space I wish I could be confident in.

If you guys quit buying this amazing product, you wouldn't see so many complaints about it goint bad!

Which is the better hard drive?

Note, this is not meant to be a flame, but I'm just wondering if so many people bought the drive because of rave reviews and past performance and are now complaining due to lack of quality. Even if IBM's track record fell from 10% defective to 5% defective, there would be many complaints because they sell so many drives.

The one that doesn't die on you 3 months after you buy it because your previous HD died. You guessed it, both were 75GXP.

I think you should get yours facts straight before posting. That 75GXPs have ridiculous RMA rates is a fact, not somebody's opinions. Just search these forums and compare the reports of dying 75GXP and the reports of ALL other dying HDs from ALL the other manufacturers. Let me know what your results are.
 
I owned a 45GB 75GXP until I sold it. It worked great the entire time. Just got two 40GB 60GXPs and I have them running in a RAID 0 configuration. I love it. Fast and no problems.
 
Glad to see there's so many negative reviews for a product that doesn't deserve such praise.

Though the review oozes awesomeness, I'd probably believe 47% of the customers are telling something deeper.

I like averaged out consumer reviews.. anything under 10% negative I discount because most people are stupid, but when you get anywhere 15%+ you have to wonder what's going on.

I guess it wasn't obvious that my statements were just a "what if?"
I'm simply saying that I see a huge amount of recommendations, possibly outside of this board, to get the GXP drives from IBM. And these huge numbers of recommendations lead to huge sales, which lead to huge complaints. I think the number of complaints on this board is not necessarily indicative of the whole picture. I have no facts.
I'm just throwing out some numbers to show a possible scenario or cause.


Undoubtedly, most users will not stress,use or benchmark the IBM drives like those who frequent this board. I was implying that isn't it possible that users from this board will have more die than the average Joe?


Heh, I should be receiving a RMA for my IBM soon 😛
 
I have three (3) 75GXPs in two different computer and all of the drives have been working flawlessly for me. Fast, quiet and cool. I'm very happy with them.
 
Reviews are based on criteria like benchmark results and volume. Those IBM drives performed very well under that criteria. Reviews are never based, for any computer product, on the longevity of a product. If they were we'd be reading reviews for products which are years old. How many AMD-k6 reviews are written today? Or Aureal sound cards? Or EDO ram?

You expect a reviewer to use a product for months/years before writing their review?

that said, its irresponsible, given all the RMAs, for the writer to ignore it. He didn't do his research.

FYI, my 75gxp has run fast, stable and quiet -- without even a bad sector -- for 10 months.

Based on MY experience with the drive, I'd give it a good review too. But based on OTHERS experiences with the drive I'd be reluctant to recommend it to a friend.

I had clicking on my 75gxp 30GB like you've had for over a year then the drive died. Check its not made in Hungary, these drives seem to have the most problems. (I sent a 20GB 7200rpm IBM and 30GB IBM 75GXP back last week RMA).

I now have 2 x 41GB 60GXP's in RAID 0 and no probs so far (both made in the Philippines).
 
Hmm, my GXP75 30Gb is made in Hungary and 11 months old. Might be a good idea to start backing up all the data then...
It's been working very well so far though.
 
My 75GXP has been working flawlessly for over a year. Either I got lucky, or the drive is not as bad as so few would want us to believe.
