i wonder how close he came to being found in time...maybe if they had found the rest of his family a day earlier....

I'm sad yet oh so confused! Why was the senior gadgets editor from CNET of all places using a road map to find his way around Oregon?!? If anyone should have had a GPS, it would have been him.

im thinking he probably had a built in gps unit in the car...so he probably never bothered with a hand held one...

That's too bad. I can't figure out why he would leave the road and start traveling through completely unfamiliar and rugged terrain like that, but, I'm sure he felt it was his best chance to help his family.

just because he reviews them doesn't mean he can afford it

for all we know, cnet may be paying him peanuts

damn, what a ****** way to go.
i guess its better to go out trying to help your family than to be disease riddled, old, and helpless, though.

I bet his family would disagree 😛

He tested a lot of music players (mainly mp3 music players) don't remember much of the GPS stuff if any he tested. Maybe he wasn't really interested in GPS gadgets as his car had Onstar capability but didnt have the service.

Okay, even though I felt really sorry that he died.. I cannot help thinking that he was an idiot for leaving his car... what did he expect to find in such a rugged and desolate terrain? Did he think there was going to be a restaurant or a mall "just arround the corner"? Just doesn't make sense to me... I would have at least stayed by the car and if possible tried to keep as warm as possible.. Yea, 20/20 is highsight.. but its pretty common sense.. it is the option with the highest chance of survival... maybe I'm just not seeing something here..

I could be wrong, but I think they were only ~10-15 miles away from the Denny's (and town) that they stopped at. That seems like a doable hike to me.

I have not been following this story, can someone do a cliffs notes? why was he seperated from his family, whats with the 18 care packages, father to sons notes, etc that I've read from the news? I am confused.

Because he watched a couple episodes of "I shouldn't be alive" and thought he could get outta there alive.

they said he planned to only go out for the day. maybe he was going to leave a trail back to the car to increase their odds then got lost/disoriented by hypothermia.

i think, as any good father, he was willing to do anything to increase the odds of his family surviving, even if it meant his own death.
