CMOS checksum error w/ ABIT BG7

I just purchased the BG7 with a P41.6a. I've never been able to get past the beep and access the BIOS. The error I get is "CMOS cecksum error - Defaults Loaded". Then it would hang and not respond to the DEL, F1, or F2 key. I removed all the peripheral cards,
even the video card. Then I tried clearing the CMOS by moving the jumpers from 1&2 to 2&3. I tried removing the battery for 5 minutes and replacing it. Also tried, booting w/o the battery. I still get the same error. Any suggestions before I RMA the board back?

Sorry to say, it sounds like RMA is the next step.

Sounds like a bad CMOS battery. I would change that first. Ape Out.

I have personally had the same problem except with a different board. and what you will need to do is look on the net for what is called a "flash bios" for that specific board the motherboard maker should have such software on their web site. it isn't hard to do at all. you will once you get the flash bios program and have that done I would definately recommend updating your bios itself.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I did figure out what was causing the errors. I somehow wired the USB cables wrong. It never occurred to me that the CMOS Checksum error would indicate a wiring problem.

I once posted somewhere that when we first get the M/B out of the box, donot attach anything, put the M/B on a flat insulating surface ( a cardboard or something) fit the CPU, RAM, connect the monitor to the on-board VGA if it's there, plug-in the power supply connection and the keyboard if you like, then try to boot-up using a skew driver shorten the power-on jumper. This way we are sure that if it doesn't boot, it is because the CPU, the RAM, or the Motherboard itself. Most people fit their M/B to the case right out of the box, and a lot of mishaps could have happened in the process. I had once been fiddling the whole afternoon just to fine out in the end that I did have a small skew stuck at the back of the M/B, fortunately I had not damage the M/B electricallly. When all are OK then start assembling into the case.

I have had the same problem with USB wiring and CMOS checksum error with a different motherboard. The only difference was that the BIOS got totally screwed up with mine. Although it was a cheap motherboard, it still sucked.

As long as your mobo gets +5 VSB (read: it's getting power), CMOS battery should not be a problem (read: using it without CMOS battery). So give it a short that way.

Either way, if the battery were dead, I'd expect it to still pass POST - sounds to me more like a BIOS problem. Is there some way
that you can try a BIOS recovery or somesuch on that board? If not, I feel an RMA coming up .
