cmos CHECKSUM ERROR LOADING DEFAULTS kr7a mobo..ahhhhh

Hi all in head ache land

I have an abit Kr7a - 133 motherboard and an Athlon xp1700.

When I restarted my computer I recieved the message "cmos CHECKSUM ERROR LOADING DEFAULTS" F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup.
If I push F1 then the computer runs fine. Windows boots like normal. But if I push DEL and load even the fail safe defaults then when I push F10 to save the computer just stops. The monitor goes into standby and the fans keep running but it just falls asleep.

I have to reset the cmos by using the jumper and I am back to step one.

It is allways back to step one.
when I push F1 and continue on to windows. The next time I restart the message is

"CPU IS UNWORKABLE OR HAS CHANGED" F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup. But F1 loads windows as normal

Any thoughts? should I flash it?
My bios is 6n

Just enter the bios...go to softmenu setup...cpu frequency and set it to 1700 and all will be fine...for some reason the board recognized my 1700 as 1100(sounds as if yours is doing the same) ..once enter the bios and id the cpu all is well...it will reboot fine..do not set to fail safe etc...

once you setup it up as a 1700 let it boot and shutdown normally and reboot and enter the bios and tweak away...no need to change the bios

right now it is running a 1100 mhz,
But my problem is i can't save cmos info, once i save i got to clear cmos,
Stage 1 again

why wont it save..try making the change and hit F10 and Yes ...

a 1700 should not run at 1100....unless you unlocked the chip...

could be the battery is bad

Also you try removing the battery ..wait 10 min replace ..clear the cmos..reboot and enter the bios and reset cpu to 1700 and try t oreboot...could be the battery is poorly seated as well

it may be a bad bios i'm thinking... the 1700 multiplyer is 11 x 100 fsb

but if i f10 in cmos no boot, nothing

Mine does the same thing if I clear the cmos the chip is seen as a 1100 and I get a checksum error...if you enter the bios and set it as a 1700 ...make no other bios changes(ie mmeory leave everything at default ) and F10 and save it.... does it still not reboot and post?? for me if I do this it will post reboot and I let it boot to winxp and then shutdown and restart and tweak away

If this is the case down the 6N bios and refalsh the board and give it another try..if that fails try a new cmos battery or if you bought the board locally just exchange it and try again

I assume the memory and video card are well seated..also I have heard some people have problems with the cpu not well seated

i got the board with 6n on it... so try to flash it?

p.s. i got it mail order

video & mem are set

you could try to reflash it to make sure the bios is ok..though I doubt it will help..I am sure the bios is ok....

I would try to replace the cmos battery since RMA will take a bit..this could be quick thing to check ...of course the board could be bad..it happens

You may want to request an rma and try a new battery and if that fails get a new mobo....

BTW..what is your setup...PS etc...

Are the bios settings at default....check make sure the power management stuff is at default this has cuased me headaches before

Sure wish I could be more helpful

ok, i've had a similar problem with an abit board (KT7A-RAID). here's what i did:

1) turn off computer, switch off power supply, unplug power supply
2) in the computer, unplug ATX connector to motherboard, REMOVE CMOS battery
3) close CMOS jumper to discharge the CMOS
4) leave the room and have a beer, eat a snack, let it sit for like 10 min
5) come back, set CMOS jumper back, put battery back in, reconnect ATX connector, replug computer in wall, switch on power supply, power up the computer
6) hit DEL to go to CMOS, as soon as it loads up, hit F10 to save/exit.
7) pray that when it comes back it doesn't give you that error.

Go here- load the optimum bios settings for the KR7A-Raid. Be sure to check your memory settings also. I had to bump my DDR voltage to 2.75 for it to run stable. Set all RAM settings to optimum, with possibly the exception of the 1T Command Rate. 1T will provide a great improvement in memory benches, but it is not stable with some brands (generic) of memory. Good Luck!!

BTW- I have the same Mobo(w/bios 6G)/CPU as you.

Also try manually setting your FSB to 133. I select user define for everything and load the correct settings. I don't think bios will set the FSB to 133 even if you select Auto for CPU SPD. You will need to select user define for voltages to bump uip DDR voltage anyway. 2.75V is still VERY safe for your memory.

Sounds like poor cpu-recognition by your BIOS - a common KR7A complaint.

Set 'CPU Operating Speed' to 'User Define'. Set 'Multiplier factor' to CORRECT multiplier for your cpu. Set 'CPU FSB Clock' to 133MHz or whatever speed you wish.

That should work.

Hope this helps!
