CMOS Checksum Error - Defaults Loaded?

I have just tried booting up my newly built computer for the first time, but I couldn't get into BIOS because an error keeps coming up:

CMOS Checksum Error - Defaults Loaded

I can't do anything, it won't let me hit the Del key after that message.

Whats the problem?

MY SYSTEM:
Abit Kg7
512 DDR PC2100 Crucial - 2 DIMMS of 256MB
Athlon XP1700

PS - I have already checked the DIMM connections and checked to see if I put them in the correct slots, and still no resolve.

First, I would make certain that the CMOS clear jumper is set to 1-2 and not 2-3, If it's on default already I would clear the CMOS(don't forget to unplug the power supply first) and try to access the BIOS again. In Appendix E of the PDF on-line manual in the Q&A's it says that you should always clear the CMOS when installing the board. If you still can't enter the Bios then make sure the keyboard isn,t at fault. If it's working correctly and it's USB then use a PS2 adapter to connect it and see if that resolves the issue.Let me know how it's going and I hope this helps you out 🙂

Is there a failure code that comes up with that message (or before or after that message)? Some times codes come up - generally 3 digit ones - and that can narrow down the problem.

Try clearing CMOS as stated previously. Then try replacing battery. Disconnect everying but power and video into the back of computer. If your still getting that error msg.. replace motherboard.

Yes, I cleared the CMOS and it works great now. I have set all the BIOS settings and am ready to insert the boot disk (Disk 1 of 4 for W2k). But when I do, it comes up Disk I/O Error. Whats the problem?
