170hp - 2800lbs

Pontiac.com is saying it's a 5-speed by Aisin. LSD will be optional. 18" wheels with discs and ABS. They are still saying it's going to start at $20k, as well. The Saturn site has more info on the Sky, but that should be cross-platform info.

I wish someone other than Subaru would put out regular cars with AWD.

I don't want AWD, it's a waste of both power and money. I have survived for years in MI without the need, why start now?

Now if they would just drop the S/C'd ecotec from the Cobalt all will be well.

It's definitely looking like a nice little package for $20k... the Miata definitely needs to move on to a 3rd gen model soon.

thats going to be painful slow acceleration.

Probably mid 15's.

EDIT: conservative estimate. Knowing GM it'll be high 15's.

That's not bad. A lot of cars weigh about 2800, right?

Things like Civics maybe. Any midsize car is about 3300 lbs.

Its pretty good for an entry-level roadster... more power means improving suspension/transmission/handling, and then you're competing against the S2000 instead of the Miata and MR2 Spyder.

It is on the heavy side though... Miatas are about 300 pounds thinner.

I believe an RSX-S weighs ~2800 pounds and puts out 200HP.

though the torque is absent...

do what mazda did to make the "mazdaspeed" :)

The Miata is 2500 and the MR Spyder is 2200 IIRC so the HP/weight ratio is right on for the cars the Solstice should be competing against.

As the fun factor of a roadster is based on several things other than horsepower, I'm sure you'll be happy with your purchase :)

MazdaSpeed Miata > Solstice. I wonder what Mazda has up their sleeves for the next gen. Yes, its actually due out soon!

Perhaps, but it also costs $6k more ;)

BTW, if the Solstice is getting 170 HP, what does that mean for the upcoming Sky and Buick Vélite?

I was guessing we'd see:
Sky entry level with about 160ish HP, mild handling, and no frills
Solstice sporty model about 200 HP from a supercharged 4-cyl and aggressive handling
Vélite luxury model with about 200 HP but from a V6 and firm, but comfortable handling

Now, with the Solstice getting 170, I'm not sure which direction the other two will go...

The Miata is the best-selling roadster worldwide, and its earned it.

Even a non-MS Miata can run a mid-high 15s for $22k.
